Clubbed nails - a sign of something worrying?

I really need help. The nails on my thumbs are extremely clubbed/curved and I have read that it can be a symptom of cancer. Has anyone had this? I'm really worried and not sure if it's normal or whether to get it checked out. I've attached pics. Many thanks

It can also be a sign of some inflammatory arthritic conditions and bowel disease, so not limited to cancer.

If you have always had them, there could also be a genetic element.

Thank you @NigellaAwesome . I think they've always been kind of like this, just not as bad. Would you say I should get it checked out?

I’ve always had this on my thumb nails and have been told it’s related to my psoriasis. Do you suffer from that or any other auto-immune disease? Mine definitely get worse when I have a psoriatic flare up

widgety · 28/11/2021 20:45

@smileyotter I don't have any health conditions that I know of

I believe it can also be related to heart/blood pressure issues. Worth asking a GP. Do you have any other notable symptoms?

widgety · 28/11/2021 21:17

@BabyRace no other symptoms at all. The only thing I have is joint pain

I thought it was a heart thing.

Have you been having gel nails? Mine go weird after I have nails on for a long time

It's to do with nail dehydration apparently

Lovelymincepies · 28/11/2021 21:33

Do you smoke?

Finger clubbing is a sign of lung disease.

Your nails looked curved rather than clubbed. With clubbing you lose the angle between the nail and the nail bed. Do see your GP but don't worry too much.

You need to put your thumbs together and see if you have diamond shaped gap (schamroth window test).
Here's a diagram. It can mean various issues depending on associated symptoms.
