i know it is possible to have pcos but not have enlarged ovaries, but does that mean you will always have the other symptoms (excess hair, weight gain, acne etc)

Hiya, I have PCOS apparently - I had some cysts on my ovaries but not enlarged, regular periods, no weight gain, no acne, I have hairy eyebrows but I'm a quarter welsh . The only other issue I had was infertility, but as my DD and my current pregnancy will attest, even that wasn't too much of an issue.

I think you get ALL the symptoms if your ovaries are very enlarged though.

go onto Health thread 'Bad Skin-lady on there said she has PCOS.

whomovedmychocolate- is her name.

whomovedmychocolate - you sound just like my friend. she has pcos but no symptoms apart from the extra follicles on her ovaries and difficulty with ttc - i think that's quite common.

what i wanted to know was what about the people without the extra follicles on their ovaries? is it possible to then have pcos but not have many symptoms?

Cheeset - hi, I'm here already!

whomovedmychocolate · 15/12/2007 22:25

In that case, the answer is no. However you can have all sorts of endocrine disorders which can cause symptoms similar.

whomovedmychocolate · 15/12/2007 22:27

Yeah, that made lots of sense (tired sorry). Thinks like lack of ovulation, lack of periods etc. Trad associated with PCOS can be caused by your endocrine system malfunctioning.

BTW your friend might want to try acupuncture - did it for us with DD - first time.

i could say i have difficulty losing weight but then i never try that hard.

i do have body hair i wish i didn't have but i don't think it is that excessive.

i have acne but then again i don't think it is that out of the ordinary.

i could say i'm in denial.

it's all ifs, buts and maybes tbh.

ok just read on another forum a lady who is the same as me and has it. she has no cysts, a little acne, a little body hair and is overweight. so it seems it is possible and maybe should get myself down to the doctor?

i told my friend i always get on average 3 or 4 periods a year and she asked why i hadnt been to the docs about it. i just thought it was slightly out of the ordinary, a good perk and nothing to worry about and she started blathering on about pcos and scaring me.

it seems if doctors only treat it when you are ttc though then it doesn't really matter if i find out if i have it or not.

You are absolutely spot on. Lots of women have funny periods and unless it is a problem to you it's not a problem IYSWIM. Doctors like to have a label to put on your symptoms. Personally I feel like I don't have PCOS. I have lumpy ovaries - hey, my arse is non-lumpy, I'd far rather have my lumps on the inside thanks

I lost a load of weight using Paul McKenna CDs, I think it is largely about motivation. Also if you have acne, that's not necessarily a hormonal thing. It could be caused by diet, allergies, low lying viruses - if you only get it badly when you are run down, don't assume it's your hormones, it's a normal bodily response to feeling like crap.
