How long from contact to symptoms starting - stomach bug?

Hi everyone,

I’m getting myself in a panic worrying I’m going to catch the stomach bug my daughter had last week. She was sick quite a bit on Wednesday and diarrhoea Thursday but has been ok since. Husband came down with it yesterday (so 3 days after my daughter showed symptoms). So far I’ve been ok - do you think I could still get it after this long (5 days tomorrow)?

I think you stand a good chance of escaping now 🤞. Depending on what virus or bacteria is involved it's usually a few hours to 3 days in my experience ( not a medic btw). Good luck and I hope everyone is over the worst soon

Thanks! I’ve not had any appetite today but still not been sick. My poor dad and mum have got it now though :(

Oh dear. I do hope you escape. I lose my appetite when people around me have stomach bugs so hopefully your loss of appetite is the same or a result of worrying about going down with it. Keep going.

Need at least 5 days after last person in household had any symptoms for you to be somewhat confident you'll escape. Good luck...

Unfortunately, my kids have managed to pass tummy bugs between them weeks apart a few times....so it can still happen. On the brighter side, my dh and I never catch their tummy bugs (knock wood!!!) and they are now 8 and almost 10, so we have dealt with it a few times....it seems the younger you are the more likely to catch it as low immunity. My ds had one a few months ago and our 1 year old caught it, but not anyone else in the family. However, some families seem more prone to catching them. I know one family that every time one child gets it...the entire family passes it around until everyone has had it.

@AnonyHB

Really feel your pain. Are you an emetophobe too? X

Noooo don’t say that! That’s Thursday then as husband was sick Saturday. Ugh

Not quite but not far off. I really dislike it (I know we all do) and panic about it. Once I am actually ill I tend to cope with it OK but the thought of it and build up to it make me incredibly anxious.

I find I rarely get a sharp bug but instead I feel ropey and queasy for about 3 weeks when exposed. I often wish I could just get It over with, it's awful.

pringlexo · 18/11/2021 14:14

@AnonyHB

Yes I agree the build up and waiting is horrendous.
How are you today? Have you escaped it?!

AnonyHB · 21/11/2021 21:06

I escaped the vomming but like you describe @carlydooly I’ve felt nauseous all week and no appetite!

Mamabear12 · 21/11/2021 21:23

It could be you felt nauseous just dealing with the others who have been sick or with worry about getting sick. When mine were younger I would lose my appetite for days when they were sick...literally if one vomitted I would not eat for a day or two! Then the next one would be sick and again I would barely eat. But now I am much better and I have 3 kids....so of course I still do not like it, but I am able to cope much better. ...and eat even if they have been sick....but I always make sure to eat sensibly the next couple of weeks...just in case!!
