Pain in gallbladder area but scan clear. Fatty liver?

I had an ultrasound this morning as my gp thought I might be having gall bladder pain, but the sonograper said my gall bladder looks fine.

I have to wait 2 weeks for the report before speaking to my gp, but I was wondering what else could cause this pain?

The pain is just below my bra line on my right side. If can be front, side or back. It started as a very painful, brief stabbing pain. This happened a couple of times, and I assumed gall bladder. But since then, it has been a dull pain that comes and goes. Never bad enough to need painkillers or stop me doing things. Sometimes it feels like something is a bit swollen, and feels mildly uncomfortable when I lie on my right side.

The pain comes occasionally, most days.

Anyone have a similar experience?

The sonographer said I have a fatty liver, but said he wouldn't expect this to cause pain. I've was told I have a fatty liver a couple of years ago. I'm overweight but working on it.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Didn't the ultrasound scan more than just your gallbladder? When I had one (and it was gallbladder) they also checked liver, kidneys etc at the same time.

I had something similar in terms of the pain / discomfort but it came with other symptoms as well - acute pain and d&v after rich food, especially if I’d also had alcohol. Scan clear, h. Pylori test clear, liver fine. I reckon it’s chronic gastritis, now under control as a result of dietary changes. Don’t know if that helps at all, OP, but might be worth looking into?

AwkwardSquad · 04/11/2021 19:50

Oh and I had acid reflux, which is also now under control

BellaPoldark · 04/11/2021 19:53

I had this and was investigated for gallbladder stones, it turned out to also be chronic gastritis that was caused by a late onset egg allergy. The gastritis caused burning pain, churning and also inflammation which felt like something pressing on the diaphragm

Did they scan your pancreas?

Fireflygal · 04/11/2021 19:59

Have you had blood tests? Lft?

Einszwei · 04/11/2021 20:02

Ask for a HIDA scan.

I had problems with my gallbladder. I had no gallstones and every scan came back 'normal', but the HIDA scan assesses the function of the gallbladder using a contrast. In my case it wasn't functioning correctly, causing the pain.

No blood tests recently. I had a baby 6 months ago and definitely had lft during pregnancy, with no issues. I hope the gp does this again given the location of the pain.

Thanks, I've never heard of that. I will ask the gp. What did the pain feel like? How was it resolved?

@Dontsayyouloveme

Did they scan your pancreas?
I hope so. It was a general upper abdomen scan. The sonographer didn't mention anything about the pancreas but we only spoke briefly. I'm aware that pancreatic cancer can present with vague symptoms. If it wasn't scanned, I'll ask the gp if that can be done.

The sonographer definitely checked more than the pancreas, as he told me he could see the fatty liver (which I already knew about from a blood test a couple of years ago).

@BellaPoldark and @AwkwardSquad poor you, gastritis is nasty!

I don't think it is gastritis. I am getting heart burn as it happens. But the pain I'm getting is very much to the right - front, back and the side of my body. I had acute gastritis many years ago in my first pregnancy. It was really bloody painful! What I'm experiencing now feels very different.

I had similar to the pp above. Awful pain (needed heavy duty painkillers), constipation, gas and bloating.

Negative abdominal scan, CT scan, coeliac test.

I bought some Movicol, and made dietary changes - low fat and low FODMAP, lots of plants - and I'm 12 weeks in. It's looking like I may have a late onset gluten intolerance, and that I can't take too much dairy. Interesting experiment.

I've also lost 9lb and feel a lot better generally.

Einszwei · 04/11/2021 22:04

@AntiHop I had attacks of very severe pain with dull aching in between. I had to have my gallbladder removed, but it solved the problem instantly. Wish I had had it out sooner!
