sore patch around DS's mouth

Poor little DS (2.5) has got a really sore patch round his lower lip near the crease witht he upper lip. Its quite red. I'm not sure what has caused it. It feels rough so am thinking that its probably dribble (teething & runny nose) in the cold air outside. What do you all suggest I use on it? Have tried Aveeno & E45 but it doesn't really seem to be helping. I had hoped it would have cleaed up by now. Any ideas please?

DD is a constant dribble/snot machine,I found putting vaseline on helped xx

LoveMyGirls · 11/12/2007 21:09

Or sudocrem?

LadyOfWassail · 11/12/2007 21:10

May be the start of a coldsore or impetigo (sp?) I had it there when I was about 3 or 4.

Pollyannainexcelsis · 11/12/2007 21:10

could it be impetigo? does it crust over?

chocolateshoes · 11/12/2007 21:10

have both Vas & Sudocrem here so could give them ago when he gets up in the morning. Thanks

My DD had the same thing. Always clean the mouth area with water after every meal and put on vaseline as often as you remember with a huge blob on at nightime to shield from the dribble. Aveeno worked a threat on it as well. Sudocrem I found made it even drier so skin split more.

I woudln't say it has a crust but am wondering wether it would be a good idea to see pharmacist in the morning to check it out. Am now off to search impetigo dteails. Thanks

ok, having looked online I don't think its crusty enough for impetigo. I think the big blob of Vas will be the way to go and a visit to pharmacist just in caes

Don't think impetigo starts crusty, as far as I can recal it was like a sore patch, but try the vaseline and/or sudocreme

Poor dd has the same, except its all around her mouth (she nervously licks around her lips some of the time). I went to dr about something else, and whilst we were there he prescribed her Fucidin, which has an antibacterial and a little bit of hydrocortisone in it. Up til then I had just been doing E45 and sudocreme and Epaderm, to no effect.

The Fucidin has made a difference (its still not great tbh), it just needs something a bit more than a barrier cream to relieve the redness and to actively do something. Apparently it is particularly hard to shift this around the mouth because of all the food that can get trapped around sore areas.

You could always see if the Dr would prescribe this, if nothing else works?

Thanks Mood hte Hood. The Vaseline has made a big difference already so fingers crossed.
