My dd has had a lot of nosebleeds, sb34, from toddlerhood. It's quite a blood bath, isn't it?? I took her to the Dr to be checked out and they said it's just one of those things. They referred her to an ENT clinic in case a vein in her nose needed cauterising but by the time we had the appt she hadn't had a nose bleed for months so they sent us away. Typically, of course, she then had one that night!!

Another GP later prescribed a homeopathic remedy for her and since then she definitely doesn't get them as often as before, nor are they are bad. HTH.

My dd1 has had nose bleeds on and off since she was 3 (mow almost 5), it seemed to coincide with the start in her eczema. Her pattern tends to be spontaneous bleeds in the wee small hours! And then 2 or 3 during the following week, any time of day. She will also bleed rapidly even with the smallest bang on her nose. She also seems more prone to them if she's over tired or stressd. We use homeopathic remedies too which do ease both her nose bleeds and eczema.
Have to say it's never concerned me greatly as I had this as a child until I was 10ish! And so did both my parents! So I think it's a family tendancy. I really wouldn't worry too much. HTH.

Someone, somewhere suggested a coating of petroleum jelly inside the nose to stop night time nosebleeds. Protects the little bloodvessels or something...

Ughhh. Used to have loads of nosebleeds myself as a child. Remember getting sent home from school once. I don't think they were worried - just fed up with me dripping all over the books! When I had my tonsils out they cauterised a bloodvessel but I then bled from the other nostil. My dad always has loads of nosebleeds too. Its never bothered me though. Don't think its anything to worry about other than lots of washing

My DS had once during the night recently too and it was horrible walking in there and finding him coated from top to toe. Nearly died when I saw him but he'd just gone back to sleep.

My ds has this problem - sometimes he has several a day, sometimes nothing for weeks. He has had at least a dozen or so at night - and I only know about it when he comes in to our bedroom in the morning looking like an extra from Carrie. GP says he obviously has a weak point (probably exasperated by the fact that his finger is constantly having a good probe) and says this is very common in young children. However, she has referred him to a specialist next month. If they come up with anything of interest I'll let you know.

Keep em at it. Nose bleeds are v useful for getting out of unwanted commitments. Had a fantastic time in early teenagehood when I could just flick my nose in a certain way and it would bleed copiously. Goodbye boring maths lesson, sorry teacher but I am bleeding like a stuck pig and must pay a visit to the school nurse...

Teehee, Scummy! My grown-up DS gets nose bleeds when he has an exam (luckily not during his US Driving Test last week, which he passed) and when on planes. He's discovered you soon get a row of seats to yourself, that way!!

willow2 - have you seen the specialist yet? Did they say anything constructive?

Yes - he said bring your son back in six weeks when hopefully he won't have such a bad cold and I will be able to actually look up his nose! Talk about sod's law - we waited months for that appointment! Next one is mid December - if I don't remember to post feel free to hassle me.

OK - very late update. DS' nosebleeds haven't got any better - during the hot spell he managed 5 in four days which was a personal best - and has been scheduled to have his nose cauterised next wednesday. Has anyone got any experience of this -and whether it works? He has to have a general - poor thing - which obviously is worrying. Also, the op is in the afternoon and he can't eat or drink for six hours beforehand. That's going to be easy explaining to a 3 1/2 year old isn't it!

Willow, no experience just wanted to offer sympathy. Poor love, I hope it goes OK.

i had my nose cauterised when I was 5. Only get very occasional nose bleeds now. DS1 gets quite a few but I'm hoping he'll grow out of them as I don't think we could "do" an op at the moment. Hospital drs are generally incredibly dense about what it means to be non-verbal autistic and insist on shwoing him what they are going to do with teddies etc. There have been times when even I have been wondering whether he needs something done though.

Good luck- my understanding is that its a very short op and it cetainly worked wonders in my case. Got to be good for their iron levels not to be bleeding all the time as well.

Willow, much sympathy for your ds. I has nosebleeds for years till I had my nose cauterised when I was 15. Now much better, with only the annoying side effect that my nose gets really itchy when the pollen count is high!
