PREDNISOLONE (STEROIDS) SIDE EFFECTS

hellobellosback · 10/12/2007 17:25

I'm on a short course of Prednisolone for colitis. I started on 40mg and am reducing the dose over 6 weeks to nil. This week I'll be down to 15mg.
I am often really tired and weak, have headaches, I'm a moody cow, and I'm salivating and dribbling for Britain.
I'm assuming the way I am feeling is being caused by the steroids since I didn't feel like this before I was given them. The doctor hasn't been any help at all and just wants to suck more blood out of me. I am feeling pretty depressed about the situation, and it's more difficult dealing with different doctors and gp since we are not at home at the moment.

Not sure whether this is helpful, but I was on a short course of the same steriod for alopecia and didn't have any problematic side-effects. Hope you feel better soon. At least it is only for a short time.

obv run it past your gp as well but yes, steroids can cause the tiredness and moodiness, they seem to exaggerate feelings so a bit sad becomes hysterically sad, it can be worse when the dose changes as well so a fast taper while good might be making you feel worse iyswim? symptoms go fast once you stop though. are you on a daily or alt day dose and taking them in the morning?

My DS has had these on an off for asthma so intersted to hear an adult describe the effects. Have to say never noticed DS changing when on them but he is often moody so who can tell.

I take a monster handful of pills in the morning as the doc said it can make sleeping difficult and I take them every day. They are also making me shaky and quakey, and I can't sleep.

The nurse in the hospital said that folic acid prescribed by the doc may well help, but doc said they only wanted to suck blood. Vampires.

My DS takes these on and off for his condition and they make hom hyper and often reduce his appitite, but I am not sure of any other effetcs - he is only 2.9 so hard to tell

never heard of folic acid thing. you are lucky about the reduced appetite thing, madhouse, they ususally increase appetite, ds goes bonkers for food when on high doses. they make ds sleepy during the day and hyper at night - fantastic! I can' really think of any advice, just that it is normal and it will go away again once the steroids stop. hth
