magic cough medicine needed...........

My Ds is 30 mths and has a bad virus.Snotty nose, high temp, watering eyes sore throat and a really bad chesty cough.We have taken him to the docs (as he is prone to febrile convulsions)and were told to ride it out and to give him the usual paracetamol or ibuprofen.
His cough seems to be getting worse and he now has a sore thoat.Oh joy of joys!
Does anybody have any cough remedies or medicine they can recommend for a chesty cough and sore throat?
DS doesn't drink anything but water!

I've heard a spoonful of honey is supposed to be good.

Honey more effective than over the counter cough medicines, or so I read in the paper the other day.

the study used buckwheat honey but I guess any dark runny honey would work.

In the study they gave two-five year olds half a teaspoon of honey and it was more effective then cough medicine
