While Ds was on it he didn't need any prednisolone or any other antibiotics.

Since he's been off them he's had pneumonia and various other chest problems resulting in iv abs at one point.

Don't really know much about long term use Ds is coming up for 3 and i've lost count of the amount of medication he's had

That is interesting

Sorry I just am struggling (as I am sure you are) to find solutions

natalies1982 · 09/12/2007 13:13

my son suffers terrible asthma hes 3 years old and on becotide, singulair and salbutamol but hes asthma has never been under control he needs oral predisolone every 3-4 weeks to help his breathing.
the hospital have spoken about giving him the anti biotic mentioned about to help him in the winter months as this is when hes at his worst.

thankfully we r under the best care, as hes under a respiratory consulant at great ormond street for his asthma.

we r waiting an admission to see y hes chest is so bad and y he needs so much oral steroids.

i really can relate how to how ur feeling its horrible esp when they go down hill so quickly.

alirobins · 09/12/2007 18:57

Wel he's struggling again but they always go down hill at night don't they.

Katymac · 09/12/2007 20:56

Aww - hope he feels brighter soon

natalies1982 · 09/12/2007 21:05

yeh matthew is currenlty nesting a cough which is worse at night and 1st thing in the morning, the weather dont help matthew really struggled with change in temp so going in to out etc.

do see a respiratory speclist? has ur lo had any tests done?

alirobins · 09/12/2007 21:20

Yeah we are under a consultant every 6 weeks at hospital.

Ds has had allergy tests as also suffers from anaphylaxis

He has had chest x rays and a barium swallow to check for reflux but thats it.

OP posts:
natalies1982 · 09/12/2007 21:25

has he ever been tested for CF? not wanting to scare you but matthew has been tested twice for it.

did the allaerfy tests show up anything what about the chest xray?

matthew had chest xray last week which showed hyperinflation of the lungs

TheMincePiedMadHouse · 09/12/2007 21:35

Oh i am a bit late to this thread, but DS1 (2.9) sufferes with transient eposodic wheeze, which is a techincal way of saying breathing difficulties, but wedont know what casues them.

He had non RSV bhronchilitis at 4 months old (summer) and was ventilated and has suffered ever since.

He has had 7 tests for CF and we finally got a negative, rather than a borderline/grey area.

We tried Singulair with no luck, as he hwas suffering with Night terrors and rage and we can not use a nebulizer due to it rasing his heart rate dangerously high.

we have to resort to regular pred and ventolin (10 puffs up to every 2 hours) during a bad time.

He is due for a review on Feb and will prob have an MRI to check out his chest.

One thing we have done that has really helped is put a humidfyer in his room and we use it all the time.

alirobins · 09/12/2007 21:44

the only diagnosis is that he's got brittle asthma and small twitchy airways in his lungs

He's allergic to egg fish nuts and cats.

The consultant was hoping he'll get better as he grows because his airways will grow too but nothing much his happening

He's only ever been tested in the heal prick as a baby.

OP posts:
emkana · 09/12/2007 21:45

Have they ever talked about doing a bronchoscopy? Have they tested his immune system?

TheMincePiedMadHouse · 09/12/2007 21:46

They did not do the heel prick test in our area. we were also told DS1 would outgrow, but no sign yet. He does not apeer to be alergic to anything yet, although does have really dry skin and we avouid SLA and SLS

alirobins · 09/12/2007 21:54

emkana- never mentioned any other tests yet.

Consultant said when he's older they can do lung function tests.

He's just cough cough cough at moment and his inhalor is only just lasting the 2 hour minimum

I hate this time of year.

OP posts:
alirobins · 10/12/2007 08:26

Well he spent the night trowing up too

OP posts:
natalies1982 · 10/12/2007 09:05

i would maybe ask for a bronchscopy this is the nxt step for my ds. sorry hes still not well. they can do lung function tests now they can do them from a baby so i would maybe push for one of these

its intresting about the inhaler and what people say, our asthma nurse says if they r needing it less than 4 hourly they r not coping so get them seen, when matthew is ill he needs his every hour so we go docs and they just say im over using it and dont, but obv hes only having it every hour coz he needs it.

has ur ds tried other meds? matthew has been on becotide and salbutmaol for 3 years and singuliar for 6 months.

really feel for u coz i know how u feel, we have an on going battle with his chest and it breaks my heart.

alirobins · 10/12/2007 09:17

At the moment he's on seritide ventolin atrovent and singular

We have tried becotide, flixotide and neither of them helped

I'm going to leave a message fof his consultant today to see what he thinks.

OP posts:
natalies1982 · 10/12/2007 09:19

is the cons a respiratory speclist in asthma? or just a normal paed consultant.

how old is ur lo again sorry matthew was 3 in july.

does he get alot of infections like chest infections, croup, pneumonia etc?

alirobins · 10/12/2007 09:25

He is a resp specialist.

He's three in just over 2 weeks.

He's had so many chest infections i've lost count. He gets croup really bad he always needs to go to hospital

He's had pneumonia twice

I'm so fed up

OP posts:
TheMincePiedMadHouse · 10/12/2007 09:27

Morning - I am so sorry about him being sick too - we get this when DS1 ius coughing so much.

It might be a good idea to go to the GO again nad see if you can bring his appointment forward with the consultant.

I really do symapthise, especially as you can do nothing to help.

natalies1982 · 10/12/2007 09:40

yeh matthew is the same, hes had pneumonia 4 times in the last year, 15 attacks of croup in the last 2 years, repeated chest infections, bronchilitis, RSV.

i would defo ring and ask about further testing into his chest. matthew asthma has never been under control and his chest xray proved that last week,

hugs

alirobins · 10/12/2007 11:12

Just been to gp and they put him on a nebuliser again

nat- its nice to talk to somebody in the same boat

Oh and GP thinks Ds has got a virus on top of the infection

OP posts:
natalies1982 · 10/12/2007 11:16

sorry hes on nebuliser have u manged to get hold of someone at the hosp? when is ur nxt planned app?

this time of year is horrid, does he suffer in the summer to? matthew is bascially same all year round and the heat really affects him.

hope hes better soon

AllieBeHomeForChristmas · 10/12/2007 11:30

hi all. DD is bad today also. No wheeze but twitchy from a virus. She is constantly coughing, and is on 5 days of pred. we also stopped the singulair due to terrors and rage in the night, luckily we are seeing the resp consultant at 3:45 today... I hate this.

natalies1982 · 10/12/2007 11:52

sorry to hear ur dd is not well to hope the oral pred will help they really help matthew when hes bad. good luck with app later, we r waiting for an admission to go in for more tests, so dont have app yet to see resp cons again.
how old is ur lo

AllieBeHomeForChristmas · 10/12/2007 13:09

she'll be 3 end of Jan. Sometimes the pred works, it hasn't kicked in yet and she has had 2 doses. I have spoken to the asthma nurse and we are going over earlier as she is constantly coughing and the salbutamol is only lasting about an hour she hasn't been admitted for a while now, but i think we may be staying in tonight if the steroids don't start working soon
