I just need a bit of mumsnet advice. My ds is month old today and I am concerned about his eyes as they are not both looking in quite the same direction. I asked the midwives about it when we were in hospital and they said it was perfectly normal in newborn babies. Is it still this normal in month old babies. It is less obvious now but one of his eyes def has a tendancy toward the middle.

I've seen very young babies have this ( afew weeks old), and it does right itself usually. Try not to worry.

ds1's eyes were a little bit crossed as a baby - seemed to be anyway. got a referral and the eye specialist said they were fine and would look totally normal in time.

speak to your gp, they can refer you and you can put yourmindat rest.

Does anyone know if it has a proper name?

It usually fine in small ones (and hard to tell - to do with the shape of the nose). DS3 has a squint but it didn't really become obvious until he was getting on for 2.

no idea on whether it has a name at all, but this is entirely normal in teeny babies. All my five did this, up to about 2mths IIRC. I just used to pat them on the head and they would look straight again (and I do mean a gentle pat by the way).

completely utterly normal......their eye muscles are still adjusting to the world around them and still trying to work out how to focus, so please don't panic

my dd was also definitely going cross eyed occassionally until she was at least 2 months old probably 3 (god, how does it all become such a blur so quickly?). It was usually when she was looking at her hands so definitely a focusing thing. Nothing up with her now at 5 1/2 months/
