So I've been feeling tired lately and stomach ache. Went to gp who done bloods. Had a call today to say I am severely anaemic and they want to refer me for bowel cancer tests and not to worry.
I'm 37 with a young family and scared to death.

Anyone been severely anaemic and it not been cancer?

No advice here, bloody stupid for them to tell you or anyone not to worry!
How long until your test? Hopefully it’s all ok, and your anemia gets treated quickly

At your age it is vastly more likely another cause.
Common reasons would be diet, periods, stomach ulcer/gastritis.
Other reasons could be coeliac, autoimmune conditions or inflammatory conditions.
Many other reasons besides these.

They say they don’t want you to worry because the statistics are another reason is more likely. However it is significant enough to need investigation.

I was severely anaemic, my blood count was only 3 and I think it’s meant to be 11. Felt awful, so tired and run down. A few months on iron tablets and I was fine, never found the cause of it.

I know it’s worrying but it will most probably be fine xx

I'm 37 with children and advanced bowel cancer. I was diagnosed last year through blood tests.

I was not anaemic. My blood count was fine. There is no such thing as "too young" but we are rare

OP - I'd been having stomach problems, went to the doc and was found to be very anaemic. Had blood tests and stool test, all negative. Still a mystery what was up, but stomach problems gone now, as have symptoms of anaemia!

strictlymisses · 29/09/2021 19:07

Thank you so much for replies. They haven't given me anything for my anemia until other tests have been done. I should hear within 2 weeks.

@crazycatladyx so sorry to hear that ThanksThanks

It is much more likely to be something more common like coeliac. Have you had heavy periods etc?

nowtygaffer · 29/09/2021 19:35

Hi I had similar 10 years ago. Investigated for bowel cancer as was severely anaemic. It was coeliac disease.

ohnotanotherusername · 29/09/2021 19:37

So you've been referred under the 2 week rule?

I know it's easy to say but try not to Kanu , this is standard guidelines. Have they asked for a 'fit' kit test from you?

Innocenta · 29/09/2021 19:51

I've been severely anaemic - recurrently, to the point of receiving IV iron multiple times - and it wasn't cancer.

I know it's scary to get referred under the two week wait policy, but only a small percentage of those referrals (I believe it's below 5%) turn out to be cancer.

Bumblesbumbles · 29/09/2021 19:55

Oh and sorry to add- yes, I was severely anaemic and it was coeliac. I needed blood transfusions. A friend was seriously anaemic and it was fibroids. She needed iron injections. I know it’s hard but Don’t jump to the worst case 💐
