2 year old tripped and flew forward and cracked head against corner of door-OW! Lots of blood but quite small cut. Swelled into a bump about size of golf ball but gone down somewhat now-it was about 3 hours ago. Cried immediately, didn't go unconscious or anything. Went abit miserable and quiet for about an hour but sat and watched tv. Won't let me touch it; it obviously hurts but he's not gone all dopey or thrown up or anything. I remember a nurse saying it's always best to get hits to the head checked out. He's doing jigsaws and eating normally; do i take him to A&E or not?

I would. Or you could ring NHS direct if you aren't sure. If you don't take him, keep an eye on things for a day or so.

Is it still bleding or had it stopped? Is it a big wound that looks like it will need healp sealing?

If not and he seems fine I wouldn't take him TBH. I'd just monitor and if he went floppy, or out of it would take him then.

i would keep an eye on him for the next 24 hours or so. If he starts being sick or appears drowsey then take him. give him some calpol too, it must hurt bless him.

HumpFreeConception · 06/12/2007 13:46

I would.
I hope he's feeling better soon.

littleboo · 06/12/2007 13:47

is he ok in himself, has he vomitted since, is he walking ok, not all clumsey, is he complaing that it hurts, can he seem to see ok.
Has it stopped bleeding
If ok with all the above, i would try a cold compress on it to help reduce the swelling, later some arnica cream to bring out bruising
Any worries at all, take him to A&E

Thanks everyone. TBH after I received the first reply from EffiePerine saying "I would" I was straight out the door! I think I only needed the slightest bit of encouragement to follow my paranoid instincts! My DH is always of the opinion that I overreact so just wanted to check it out with other Mums. Anyway A&E very nearby; walked there; all fine; they felt all around the big bump and said it didn't feel squishy so that was alright. They cleaned it up for me as he wouldn't let me near it- hair matted with blood- yuck. They gave me the head injuries leaflet to keep an eye out for any signs overnight. I think he's fine; they thought he was fine. He ate a HUGE lunch as usual. He had a head injury in the same spot when he was a small baby so i was a little bit anxious. Thank you for all your posts. It's great to get feedback so quickly when you need an ear.

So glad all is well, jetson.

EffiePerine · 07/12/2007 09:34

Glad all went OK . How is he this morning

jetson · 07/12/2007 18:31

Thanks for your messages. This morning he is absolutely fine. Doesn't seem too bothered about the bump unless I try and prod it (which I don't!). It looks gruesome but seems not to be serious. Thank you for your concern.
