Ok, it's not really, it's snot, but it feels like liquid concrete.

I have taken a cold and flu capsule, so can take any meds, any other remedy?

Mackenzies smelling salts. Vile, but have been working on our family noses for years.

Or flushing out with sea salt solution, apparently

SantaBeClausImWorthIt · 05/12/2007 22:56

steaming? Boiling water in a bowl, with olbas oil if you've got any, put your head over the bowl, and cover your head and the bowl with a towel.

Breathe in (carefully because it is boiling water!) and let the steam fill your nasal passages.

Do this for as long as it is comfortable.

SantaBeClausImWorthIt · 05/12/2007 22:57

Or have a hot bath. Close the bathroom door so that the steam builds up.

Again, if you have any, put some Olbas oil in the bath.

Really sympathise with you, this is a horrible thing to have.

ggirlsbells · 05/12/2007 22:57

head over running tap

snort up slightly and sniff out some warm water

tis truly wonderful what comes out

coldtits · 05/12/2007 22:58

Doesn't steaming make it worse? I hate feeling steamy when I'm snotty, it makes my nose feel swollen

[horror] at ggirlsbells

and more than a little admiration that someone has the courage to do that!

You won't like this, but I swear by eaing raw onion, as much as you can manage (half a large one in my case).

Dries up snot but leaves you a bit pongy temporarily.

HTH

SantaBeClausImWorthIt · 05/12/2007 23:00

I think it's the stuff that you add, like Olbas oil. But the steam should also help open everything up.

I'm intrigued with ggb's suggestion though - I almost want to have a cold to try that!

coldtits · 05/12/2007 23:00

I haven't heard of mackenzies smelling salts - where would I get them?

Gawd, snake oil salesmen would LOVE me!

SteriMar saline nose spray.

PERFECT for the job!

A staple in our cupboard.

Complete with directions on how to irrigate.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 05/12/2007 23:02

I have had this.
I got some sudafed congestion tablets and after taking them for an afternoon, the next day my nose was clear and I could breathe again.
Very good indeed and less than £2.50.

mustrunmorewantsanewname · 05/12/2007 23:04

You can get mackenzies in good branches of Boots. And, I assume, alot of independent chemists too. They are behind the counter at Boots. Little brown round shaped bottle (not a sphere; flat at front and back, but a circle looking at it straight on, whatever thats called )

coldtits · 05/12/2007 23:05

My God, it's a veritable Torturefest of medieval remedies! squirting, snorting, broiling, onioning!

I am a complete coward, that's why I am whining about having a cold (and have been whining for roughly 3 days now)

LadyOfTheFlowers · 05/12/2007 23:06

I have the salts too! LOL

coldtits · 05/12/2007 23:08

Ok. I will have an onion sandwich for breakfast, and will blob some olbas oil on me (had forgotten about it )but I just don't think I can pump anything up my nostrils - I can see how it would work, and it's a great idea, but I just can't.
