Urgent dental treatment - how to get it?

I’ve got toothache. My own dentists said they can’t see me till next week. Is there anywhere else I can go? I assume there’s an infection. If I go to an urgent care centre near me where there’s a GP, would they give me anti-biotics? If I phone round is it possible I can find another dentist who might see me tomorrow? I’m gargling with salt water a few times a day and chewing on garlic in the evenings. Any advice?

You need to tell them that you’re in pain. Use those exact words.

Clove oil on the tooth/ gum, whisky and the strongest painkillers you can find! Toothache is the pits!

Do you have a dental hospital in your area?

thetesdybears · 23/09/2021 20:41

Nhs 24 if you can't get seen by a dentist. They should refer you to a dental hospital that will see you.

^ this. And don’t downplay it.

Thanks for all your advice. I told the dentist receptionist that I have toothache. I dont know if I used the word pain, I might have said I’m in pain. That was a couple of days ago. I phoned again today to ask if there was a cancellation. I’ve googled dental hospital near me, but nothing seems to have come up, but something did come up about urgent dental treatment. I’ll try phoning tomorrow, and will try my own dentist again tomorrow. Maybe I need to find a better dental practice for the future. It’s very small. Ive been with them for 14 years.

As a previous poster said NHS 24. They do urgent dental care. I got a temporary filling to keep me going until my dentist could see me.

I'd ring your dentist tomorrow the second they're open and say you're in agony and have been up all night ( you probably will be if you leave it until next week so don't feel bad) they should have an emergency clinic. Ask them what to do if they won't see you.

Darceyhemingway · 23/09/2021 21:48

Call 111. I work I'm a dental hospital and we have a triage line but it's hard to get an appointment. 111 is your best bet

toomuchfaster · 23/09/2021 21:53

Don't call the GP, they can't help you. Ring 111 as advised above.

Mustardfan · 24/09/2021 06:06

I’ve phoned 111 (I decided to wait till the morning). They’ve given me the number of 4 emergency dental practices. One of these is on my road and I don’t use it as one time they said my husband needed work costing around £2000, my husband went elsewhere for a second opinion and was told he didn’t need any treatment. That was years ago, and he hasn’t had problems since. It makes me worried about contacting any of the dental practices, though I guess I’ll have to. I’ll try my practice again today.
