What painkillers have you taken?

lizandlulu · 05/12/2007 20:10

i always take cuprofen and they are ace. take the pain away in 10 mins. not much use if you havent got any, im sorry, but they are good. have't you got a 24 hour supermarket or anything like that near you? you could get some from there.
hope its better soon, there is nothing worse!

kittykat77 · 05/12/2007 20:20

Arrhh! Can completely simpathise!!

Had toothache last week, which turned out to be an infection. Had stuff done on Monday at dentist, but have the most excruciating toothache tonight, painkillers are just not working... Have resorted to the wine! Will definately be on the phone to the dentist first thing tomorrow... GOd help them if they don't give me an appointment!

SpookyMadMummy · 05/12/2007 20:21

I had toothache last week....took some Paracetamol and Codeine.. did the trick for me.

jellycat · 05/12/2007 20:26

Spooky I was going to suggest something containing codeine, if she hasn't already taken it. I used Syndol (paracetamol, codiene and something else). It was the only thing that helped me at all (I had an infection - have now had root canal work done - such a relief). I had tried plain paracetamol and ibuprofen but they had no effect.

frostythesnowmum · 05/12/2007 20:29

Tramadol - the only painkiller that touches bad toothache - the rest you might as well not bother with. Phone round your mates and see if anyone has got any?????

J2O · 05/12/2007 20:33

co codomol first, no luck so then tried ibuprofen and cold and flu tablets(all i had!) never tried tamadol, will def get some for next time! whiskey helping a little, think your meant to spit it out though! [hiccup]

Do you mean you can't go to the surgery until tomorrow, or they won't see you? They should have an emergency out of hours service.

GoneFishing · 05/12/2007 20:50

..the number will be on the answering machine if you call your dental practice.

J2O · 05/12/2007 20:54

they wouldn't see me, even though i was crying!

kittykat77 · 05/12/2007 20:56

J20 - I have also tried co codomol and ibuprofen and both together, doing nothing. Just waiting for the clock to tick by until the morning, when I can finally (hopefully) get an appointment with the dentist! Think alcohol may be the best natual remedy!

drosophila · 05/12/2007 20:58

Phone NHS direct.

www.videojug.com/film/how-to-relieve-a-toothache

www.garlic-central.com/toothache.html

I had a wisdom tooth out recently and had all manner of pain afterwards.

Dentist packed the cavity with something soaked in Clove Oil (perhaps you need a bit more than you are using).

I was taking 30mg of Codeine (I think most over the counter ones have 10), 500 mg of Paracemetol and a stronger version of Neurofen. I found the clove oil the best.

All the pain killers made me feel high.

GoneFishing · 05/12/2007 20:59

Well, if they are an NHS practice, they should see you, I would consider complaining about them.

GoneFishing · 05/12/2007 20:59

(hoping that it's not the practice I work for! )

drosophila · 05/12/2007 21:03

www.childrenfirst.nhs.uk/families/first_aid/toothache.html

This site suggests soaking cotten wool in clove oil. I would try it again with and keep the cotton wool in the mouth.

J2O · 05/12/2007 21:11

the receptionist told me off when i said i used the clove oil, said not to use to much as it may burn my gums, well, it has, and my lips, so don't think any more will work! the thing is i'm booked in for a filling tommorrow anyway, and was kept awake all night mon with it but it was ok Tue and started again about dinnertime so i put off ringing till about 2pm and she said it was too late by then, to be fair, they're letting me go in at 9 in case i need abs and then i've got to go back again at 12.20 for my fillings. whiskey seems to be helping

will definately get some strong painkillers in for next time, would rather be in labour than this!

J2O · 05/12/2007 21:12

kitty-know what you mean, only another 12 hours to go!

OP posts:
joyfulspike · 05/12/2007 21:16

You poor thing, I hate toothache, I find anbesol works really well, although this isn't much help if you can't get to a 24hr supermarket - ASDA sell it, although I think you need to ask for it at the pharmacy.

Someone told me you can go to A&E - not sure if they'll see you and can't remember under what circumstances, but if its really bad you've got nothing to lose.

karen999 · 05/12/2007 21:18

Oh, can totally sympathise and I too would rather be in labour! I had to go to dentist today for root canal treatment and am still in pain....I really wish it was fashionable to just get denttures!!

GoneFishing · 05/12/2007 21:20

Calling during surgery opening hours is entirely different to using the out of hours service. If you call during the day they are entitled to ask you to come the next day but if you call the practice number now, at night, there will be a special number on the answerphone for emergency out of hours service which will put you in touch with an on call dentist who WILL see you!

J2O · 05/12/2007 21:23

thank you gonefishing, its manageable now{love the whisky} but if it gets worse again during the night i will do.

thanks everyone, you're stars
