How long after eating bad mussels do you get sick?

So I've had mussels from a pub for my lunch today within half an hour (if that) I was on the toilet and haven't been off it since. Stomach cramps too but thankfully no sickness yet! Just wondering though is half an hour too soon for it to have had that effect?! I'm on holiday so I really hope it passes soon Sad
Anyone else had this from mussels before?

I was sick from a seafood lunch within the hour. It never made it far enough down my digestive tract to reach a toilet. I just got the sudden urge to throw up, which I did, violently.

Kindleandacuppa · 16/09/2021 16:44

I had a similar experience with prawns in Portugal, was on the toilet within the hour, it was like lava Grin awful

Barneythedinosaur · 16/09/2021 16:45

I had mussels a few weeks ago, about an hour or so after I felt my stomach twist and was violently sick for a couple of hours

WowStarsWow · 16/09/2021 16:47

Yes, happens very quickly ime. Had mussels for dinner on holiday, was ill before I would have gone to bed, so within a couple of hours. (Never eaten them since - I didn't like them enough to begin with!)

Hope you feel better soon, I think it did pass quite quickly for me, food poisoning has to be easier for a body to get rid of than a vomiting bug right?! Flowers

How many mussels?

Marni83 · 16/09/2021 16:48

Anyone else?

clouds56 · 16/09/2021 16:55

@Marni83

How many mussels?
Like a whole bowl Blush

I'm relieved it's not just me!!! Definitely NOT having mussels again!

I can deal with the diarrhoea (just about) but it's vomiting I really want to avoid. I've got a 4 month old baby who I ebf and the two just won't go well together!

*Disclaimer - i actually shit a little bit in the car park when leaving (in my knickers Blush) I was just
sooooooooo bloody lucky that there was a toilet in the car park otherwise it would have been a bridesmaids moment (to those of you who have watched that film) Car park for bloody packed as well Sad

With me (twice, I never learn from my mistakes!) the first time it was Sunday morning after eating them on Friday night, second time was exactly 24 hours. I suppose there are differences between people and how much or what bacteria you have eaten. Some people react very quickly, my body likes to think about things for a while before it explodes!

Cookerhood · 16/09/2021 17:12

Sounds a bit quick to get through your digestive tract & out the other end, but I have no idea! It's probably just one bad mussel. You should probably look etc the pub know.

Marni83 · 17/09/2021 10:01

How are you op?

FindingMeno · 17/09/2021 21:59

It took a few hours for me to start vomiting badly.
Didn't eat mussels again for years.

blitzen · 17/09/2021 22:11

Oh, OP. Hope you're alright. I had this on honeymoon. Couldn't leave my hotel the day after mussels and a couple of oysters due to mega dia-horrors. A year or two later I had projectile vomiting after mussels. On honeymoon I thought I'd had a 'bad' mussel maybe, but after the next time I googled it and think it might have been a thing called neurotoxic shellfish poisoning.

blitzen · 17/09/2021 22:15

Sorry that might be BS but there is a thing you can have with mussels like an intolerance but now doubting that's its right name.

HandScreen · 18/09/2021 08:04

Within the hour, for me

Nat6999 · 18/09/2021 08:55

I had the same thing after eating prawns at a christening, was home probably an hour after but was starting with stomach cramps on the way home, rushed to the toilet as we got home & spent 2 hours on the loo with my head in a bucket. My mum was poisoned by some tartar sauce & hers started within an hour, violently sick & then uncontrollable diarrhoea for 24 hours. Sip some weak squash or herbal tea with sugar even if you don't normally take it, plain water will just come straight back but the sugar will help your body absorb some fluid & keep your energy levels up, don't take anything to stop diarrhoea it is the best way to get rid of the germs, take paracetamol if you can keep it down for the temperature & shivers & rest till you feel better.

maddy68 · 18/09/2021 09:16

Surely that's too quickly? It wouldn't have been digested even?

dannydyerismydad · 18/09/2021 10:36

I've never eaten mussels and not thrown up. I adore them, but it seems I'm allergic.

Every now and again I try a couple to test the theory. It never ends well.
