On Monday I wore new shoes and they have buggered up my big toe. It is exquisitely painful, the nail is bruised and it is hot to touch. The red and white area below the nail seem to have fluid in it and was wondering if I should stick a sterile pin in, hoping it may help with the pressure. Any ideas please.

Looks like a nail bed infection due to the trauma of bruising it with your new shoes. Have you tried icing it or it may be too late now. Perhaps one to ring your GP about

Agree with PP. The normal advice is to soak it in hot water as often as you can during the day and if it doesn't clear up, speak to GP. They normally clear up by themselves within a week.

If you can stick to open-toe shoes that will stop it hurting as much.

Thank you both so much for answering! I have been elevating, icing and pain killers. I thought it might be a blister but it could be infected. That would explain the reason my toe is hot and painful. It is also a bit swollen. I will see how it is tomorrow. I hope it starts to feel better.

Soak your foot in very warm water (as hot as you can handle without risk of burns), and add plenty of salt to it. It won't sting, don't worry, but it will help ease what appears to be/ sounds like, an infection. I used to get something similar often with ingrown toenails and the salty hot water combo works every time

Nurofen is anti-inflammatory so might help a bit.

Thank you I will try these things.

Returning to this in case it helps someone else. I did as recommended, and additionally used the magnesium paste. It started to get better but then got worse overnight so I went to Minor injuries this morning. They confirmed it was infected around the skin and a bit under the nail so gave.me antibiotics and dressed it for me. Hopefully it will start to get better but I have instructions to go to gp if it gets worse or come back to them if any pus develops, lovely! Fabulous NHS!
