son not standing yet

My son is 13month's old now and can't even stand yet, im so worryed. I think im gonna wait another month before i take him for a check up.

Every time i stand him up he will sit back down, im not sure if he is lazy, or just can't do it.

He is my first child, does anybody else have this problem, im very worryed.

Do ask the HV but I do remember my own first daughter didn't stand at this age either. She was absolutely fine in the end.

Pls try not to worry Musa. My friends dd only started standing at 19mths and only started cruising the furniture at 21mths. Theres now no stopping her! Do have a word with your hv to put your mind at rest tho.

Thank you guy's so much, i feel better now. It make's it worst when people start putting you under pressure. Saying your son is over one year's and he can't ever stand yet, it make's me feel useless.

Apart from not standing, he is a very happy boy.

a friend's ds didn't even move until he was 14/15 mths, never mind stand. not even a bum shuffle.

Will he stand at all, holding onto anything ? ds didn't stand on his own until he started to walk at around 13.5 months but he was cruising beforehand.

my ds2 didnt stand till 15 mths and has only started walking in the past few weeks ( hes 17.5 mths) i wouldnt worry about it, youll find that hell just get up one day and toddle around all at once!

I do remember that awful feeling when other kids were walking up our stairs unaided and dd1 couldn't even crawl. Honestly, she's now three and walks half a mile quite readily!

When you say he doesn't stand, do you mean he doesn't stand unaided, doesn't pull himself to standing, or doesn't stand holding on to anything?

I understand the attitudes of the people here who have replied - the don't worry he'll be fine attitudes. That was what all my family said to me when I was concerned about my daughter not reaching her milestones. Sometimes, however, there is a problem and the sooner it's diagnosed the better. In my daughter's case we found out she was hypotonic (low muscle tone) when she was about your son's age, and she had some occupational therapy which helped her.

How old was he when he rolled over and sat up? Does he crawl?

You say you're very worried. In that case a trip to the doctor's might be a good idea, if only to put your mind at rest. Because there probably isn't a problem.

Dd was not standing at 13 months either. She did it a couple of weeks later and at 15 months is now cruising and walking with help. As lockets implies, if they leave it late they normally spend less time going through the next few stages...do try not to worry, easier said than done I know. I was fretting with dd and she is my second!
Does he sit and crawl in a confident, practised manner? I bet he does!

My daughter is hypotonic too and she didnt stand until she was about 16 months or so.

When you say stand, do you mean unaided? or against furniture?

Is he crawling now? I would ask your HV if you are worried because if your son does need physio it is better to get refered earlier as the waiting lists are so long. ususally though it is quite normal for kids not to stand at this age.

Its like 1 is a magic number and everyone thinks a child should be walking for one and its just ridiculous. i think a latest survey said 16 months for walking was average now

He does bum shuffle, move's around everywhere. He won't even try and pull himself up. yet if i was to put him in a baby walker he will run around.

I have also being told that baby walker's i no good so i don't use it anymore.

KateAndTheGirls he was about 8 month's before he could even sit, he's only started to bum stuffle about a month ago. I did'nt think he would even do that.

He will stand for about 3 second's if i stand him against furniture, then he sit's back down again.

I am so with you on this one. I have a dd who at 14 months bum shuffles her way around but does not pull up to standing - although she readily pullsh erself upto a kneeling position. (By the way - the bum shuffling only started at 11 months)She will stand albeit briefly if I prop her up against the sofa or the side of the bath...but will soon (after 30 seconds) plonk herself back down onto her bottom. Loads of people have also told me not to worry...but it doesn't stop you from thinking about it. I also get the pressure from other people and get so bored of the 'isn't she walking yet' comments. She did sit incredibly early - 5 months but only really learny to roll over back to front at 12 months - and now won't stop.

I did speak to my HV a couple of weeks ago whose first question was - how does she get around? When I answered 'bum shuffling' she then said that it usual for bum shufflers to walk late and normal for them not to walk until 18 months old. Something to do with the wrong muscle groups!!

A friend of mine who is a physio did check her over briefly to see if there was anything wrong with her hip rotation that could have been preventing her from standing - but has said that there's nothing wrong. So hard as it is, I'm left only with the thought that she will do it in her own good time and that at the moment she doesn't want to walk!!

it is a known fact that bum shufflers are late to stand and walk as bum shuffling is so effective! honest

yes agree, don't think my first one stood at that age. Then he did and suddenly started walking.

In fact second was a late stander too and crawled mostly then walked at 17 months and now is very good physically at 4.

The thing that concerned my daughter's pedeatrician and the reason he referred us to a pediatric neurologist was that she was late with everything. She also didn't sit until 8 months. She only learnt to pull herself to standing after OT at 15 months. She stood unaided at 19 months and took her first steps at 22 months.

I still think you should see the doc if you're worried. Just because other kids that people here are telling you about did things late and then caught up, doesnt mean that there isn't a problem with your son. I don't want to worry you. There very probably isn't a problem, and even if there is it's probably not a big deal (like my daughter), but I do find it slightly annoying and patronising when everyone dismisses your concerns.

All three of my kids were walking by 13 months. However, my grandson lives with me and he didn't even stand until around 15 months. My neighbours son was 18 months before he'd stand unaided and even by two, preferred to sit or crawl rather than stand or walk. Don't worry about it, 13 months is not that old and if he's happy & healthy, he's normal.

You see, it's statements like that: "Don't worry about it, 13 months is not that old and if he's happy & healthy, he's normal" that really annoy me. (Sorry joash, but it's true.)

That's not necessarily the case. Of course the most important thing is that he's happy. And being healthy is pretty good too of course. But that doesn't mean that there isn't some sort of physical problem, and the earlier it's detected the better.

MUSA said she's very worried. Her intuition is that maybe something isn't right. What would be the harm in getting him checked out?

My friend's daughter - a bum shuffler! - also didn't walk until 16 months. She walks non-stop now. I do think there is a link. Talk to your HV or GP if you are worried, but I think bum shufflers can't see the point of walking sometimes.

KateandtheGirls i will get him checked out, your right there is no harm in getting him checked out.

My son wasn't walking or standing at one and he does have some motor planning problems (he is, however, the most fantastic child who ever lived )- but he didn't crawl or bum shuffle either - a very immobile little chap. I do think movement of any kind is a good sign.
