Tooth absess hell!

Woke up yesterday with the most horrendous toothache i've ever had in my life.
Took Nurofen but it just dulled it a little bit and the pain thankfully was only lasting 10-15mins before going away for about an hour but kept coming back.
Eating or drinking anything started it off and at least i managed to sleep last night with no pain.
Went to the dentist this morning to make an appointment and luckily the dentist was free so was able to see me straight away, he gave me Novacane inj and said that i need a root canal on my back molar or it could be pulled out.
Went back in 20 mins later and he started drilling and i HIT the roof! The nerve was not dulled at all. Gave me another inj and waited 20 mins more.
But no chance, just FAR too sensitive.
All he could do for me was put some penicillin in my tooth and give me a prescription for powder penicillin and come back in a week.
My mouth if beginning to thaw out and i'm dreading the pain coming back..Arrgggh .
At least it is being dealt with, he showed my an X-ray of the tooth and there is a great big white shadow in the middle of the tooth, Yuck!
Just feeling fed up and will have to fork out over £250 to have this work done as we don't have NHS dentists anymore.

That's another thing, never had breakfast this am, dentist said i should eat something sugary or i could faint..great!
