Ear Infections?

My 19 month toddler son has had a cold on and off for about 3 weeks. He started having a temperature about 5 days ago, and after taking him to A&E was told that he had a 'pinky' eardrum. The doctor said that he probably has an ear infection, and gave me antibiotics. How long will they take to work, as I hate seeing him in distress?
