calcium tablets for children...

MerryAnnSinglemas · 03/12/2007 15:55

ds doesn't have any dairy in his diet so I give him a daily calcium tablet (Boots chewable with vitamin d) - now it seems that they have changed the formulation and only seem to do a calcium tablet with vits d and k and is unsuitable for children under 12. I don't want any other vits/minerals, just calcium - any ideas ? please !

have you looked into other non dairy foods that contain calcium? sunflower seeds (I think), some breads are fortified with calcium, and there are loads of other foods as well

MerryAnnSinglemas · 03/12/2007 16:11

yes, he has a pretty good diet and we secretly add milk to soup and I've got him to eat bits of edam but I read in the Observer I think, some time ago, that if you give your child only one supplement, then make it one of these Boots calcium tablets....I take them too

I would think you'd only get it on prescription if there's a medical reason for him not having dairy in his diet. Does he not eat any dairy at all? Butter, icecream, yoyhurt, fromage frais?

MerryAnnSinglemas · 03/12/2007 18:35

nope, only ice cream. And mozerella and edam occassionally

BIWI's link is a good source-you could also ask to talk to your dietician.
Daily icecream.....for medicinal reasons you understand!

MerryAnnSinglemas · 03/12/2007 18:41

yes, I definitely need more calcium in that case !

My ds2 also gets calcium sandoz on prescription as he is dairy free. I doubt they would offer it on prescription unless there was a medical need.

Bit late response here, but I use the H&B supplement tablet for children that have calcium in them (only one he will tolerate putting in his mouth!)

Also he loves Adez (which is a soya fruity drink that is a good source for calcium)
Mine is a funny child can only take dairy if it's been cooked in processed foods otherwise pukes, thought I was going mad until we saw the dietican!

MerryAnnSinglemas · 05/12/2007 22:57

thanks too Martha - I just wanted calcium on it's own (plus vit D which helps absorb it I think) - anyway, problem solved as can order from Boots !
