Breath smell when ill?

Why does breath smell different when ill?

I have a poorly 9m month old baby here, and her breath has this smell to it, that only my older child has when she is ill also.

Its not a offensive smell, but its one I recognise with a person being ill.

Why?

Where does it come from?

Does it smell like pear drops? My ds smells like that because he never eats when he is ill.

biglips · 03/12/2007 10:51

its either a sore throat or tonsilities. Keep an eye on your LO for the cold infection. How long had she has it for?

biglips · 03/12/2007 10:52

Pear Drops - really??

my DDs breath smells heavy and musky

Divvy · 03/12/2007 10:57

Its just a cold, I think. She is eating well still, this is day 2 now. Wouldnt say it was a sweet smell.

I am keeping her dosed up with baby paracetamol.

If she does go off her bottles I will take her docs.

Yes Big Lips - ketosis. Anorexics get it, and people who do the Atkins Diet!

contentiouscat · 03/12/2007 11:01

Dehydration can make your breath smell too and there is nothing sweet about that smell so make sure she is drinking enough

biglips · 03/12/2007 11:02

really...i never knew.

Divvy · 03/12/2007 11:03

So is ketosis a bad thing for a 9 month old, or is it just a natural part of being ill?

She is drinking and eating her food still.

Bad breath usually says upset stomach to me!

bobsyouruncle · 03/12/2007 11:10

My dc always have smelly breath when they're ill too, even if it's only a cold.

OhComeLetUsADiorHim · 03/12/2007 11:11

Well, my ds gets it every time he is ill. It really has that distinctive Pear Drops smell (nail polish remover too). Once he eats again, it goes. If the smell is not that, maybe it is tonsillitis as Big Lips said.

If she is eating and drinking well, I wouldn't worry too much. Does she have a temperature?

TenLordsaLapin · 03/12/2007 11:15

Yep, my DS has it too, has barely eaten since Thursday

Hulababy · 03/12/2007 11:16

DD always has a different smell about her when she is poorly. Doesn't have to be related to her throat or anything, even just a cold brings on a "poorly" smell.

Divvy · 03/12/2007 11:29

Thats it, its a poorly smell.

So its not ketosis as she is eating and drinking still. Its def not a sweet smell.

Has a slight temp, but is having regular paracetamol.

Not concerned about her being a "bit" ill really, just wondered where this smell comes from...the poorly smell
