Is 2 bottles of wine a week dangerous?

I have been battling this for many a long year and I feel like trying to stop is causing me more trouble than the original problem.

Aged 63 so unlikely to get pregnant.

A week?

You’ll be fine.

Spodge · 20/08/2021 17:57

I think it's about 9 units a bottle in a bottle of wine around 12%, so that's 18 units a week. Over the guidelines (just) but if you can stick to the two I can't see it as being a massive problem. Unless of course you have been given medical advice to the effect that you must stop or else.

PurpleDaisies · 20/08/2021 18:00

You are drinking a bit over the recommended limit but the more concerning thing is that cutting down is causing you so much trouble. What’s happening when you try to limit your alcohol?

MrsPworkingmummy · 20/08/2021 18:01

Christ, well we must have a massive problem in our house as we get through 2 bottles a night, not including the pre-dinner G&Ts Grin. We are on our holidays admittedly (teachers) but get through a bottle of gin a week and a few bottles of wine. We both need to relax after our children tire us out all day.

GoodnightGrandma · 20/08/2021 18:02

Lots of people drink a bottle a day, my DH included.
I have 2 bottles a week

EgonSpengler2020 · 20/08/2021 18:05

It's not ideal, so don't let the quantity creep up with more bottles of wine or other drinks when your out. But it's not terrible either.

Suzi888 · 20/08/2021 18:06

I wouldn’t say it’s dangerous, but you sound like you want to cut down.

Ostryga · 20/08/2021 18:06

This is mumsnet, where half a glass of wine a month is considering a raging lush.

Of course it fine. You’re an adult, drink whatever the fuck you want. And if you think it’s too much, drink less. That’s it.

😂😂😂

Last week I met up with a friend for lunch. We had 3 bottles of wine between us, plus 2 cocktails each. I just made the last train home. Luckily I was ok the next day.

PurpleDaisies · 20/08/2021 18:20

Judging whether what you’re drinking is healthy based on what other people drink is always going to be flawed. You’ll either think you’re a Puritan or a raging alcoholic depending on who you’re talking to.

Look at what the NHS says.

The important thing here that some posters seem to have missed is that the op has implied she wants to (and has tried to) cut down but that had caused her a lot of trouble. That is a bit concerning.

WimpoleHat · 20/08/2021 18:24

Spread over the week, it’s probably fine. A bit over the “recommended limit”, but someone in the know told me how those limits were derived (and it was basically made up!). So if you feel okay with it, I wouldn’t worry. Two bottles a night, or even a weekend? Unlikely to do you much good.

WimpoleHat · 20/08/2021 18:25

This is very good advice generally, I think @Ostryga!

KingHiss · 20/08/2021 18:32

The "guidelines" are based on modelling by Sheffield University. As we have seen thanks to Covid, modelling is shite.
As an aside Sheffield needed two goes to get a limit Public Health England were happy with, FOI requests show this.

UrbanRambler · 20/08/2021 18:37

I think when it's a couple of bottles a day, every day, that's a problem (although there seem to be many people who function OK, at that level of intake, so they would argue it's fine). 2 bottles of wine a week seems reasonable, especially if they are spaced out a bit.

PotteringAlong · 20/08/2021 18:42

Yes @MrsPworkingmummy, you do have a massive problem in your house if that’s what you drink week in week out

userxx · 20/08/2021 18:45

2 bottles a week fine, 2 bottles a night, maybe not.

CarrotTops · 20/08/2021 18:48

2 bottles of what? Wine?

It depends what you do when you've have the wine if it's dangerous Grin if your driving then yes Grin but generally it's slightly over the recommended limits, obviously there is a slight risk to your health the more alcohol you drink but dangerous is a strong term.

Cheesecheeseboard · 20/08/2021 18:49

@MrsPworkingmummy sadly I think yes you do have a problem, you can laugh it off but I wouldn’t risk my liver or health

sadperson16 · 20/08/2021 19:12

I would never, ever drive after drinking.

It’s not great for your cancer risk and bone health. Boring sorry. Maybe just a couple of glasses at a weekend would be better? You did ask

sadperson16 · 20/08/2021 19:22

Re 'you did ask' yes,the cancer thing bothers me.

Ostryga · 20/08/2021 19:23

Op do you want to stop drinking?

Is there something that’s worrying you now health-wise?

PurplePumpkinDream · 20/08/2021 19:24

I used to enjoy drinking regularly, a (large) glass of wine and a double gin a tonic every night, I was never drunk but just pleasantly relaxed. Then one day I just went off it, and never wanted it again. I now realise I was having four units a day, so 28 a week!

Riapia · 20/08/2021 19:24

Everybody tells me when I’m drunk.
No one notices when I’m thirsty.

sadperson16 · 20/08/2021 19:25

No worries re health.Massive worries re life in general.
