Is 2 bottles of wine a week dangerous?

I have been battling this for many a long year and I feel like trying to stop is causing me more trouble than the original problem.

Aged 63 so unlikely to get pregnant.

I'm surprised by how many people seem to be almost encouraging the OP not to worry and modelling being relaxed about drinking more. When someone is struggling already to change, that can be really counter-productive.

I have absolutely no judgement, but the OP has said she wants to reduce, is struggling to reduce, that she has lots of problems, and is depressed and that drinking is making her life worse....

OP, do you think your "two bottles a week" is really your upper limit? And is this spread evenly through the week? It may be a good first step to just really accurately quantify how much you are consuming and in what kind of pattern, with what triggers.

I am sorry you are struggling with this, and that life isn't going well for now. Daffodil

Yes @MrsPworkingmummy, you do have a massive problem in your house if that’s what you drink week in week out“

Agree. People don’t want to hear it though.

BigButtons · 20/08/2021 21:27

Op I am currently reading ‘alcohol explained’
I have always been a drinker but lately have found it bringing diminishing returns. I had until recently never thought I could cut down or stop. It is true that alcohol causes anxiety and depression and we drink to alleviate that but it makes it worse so we drink more.
From Monday- the end of my holiday- I am not going to touch a drop for 30 days- I am actually looking forward to to and I NEvER EVER thought I would say that.

KingHiss · 20/08/2021 21:34

@SheWoreYellow "Do you know what the rejected limit was?"
Yes, they first came up with leaving the "guidelines" at 20 units p/week but PHE told them to try again.
Sheffield has a nice little earner going with their models, Scotland used them to get the MUP of alcohol pushed through and now Australia's paying them to come with similar shite.
The Temperance lobby is gaining traction there as well.

Well, I'm suprised by the strength of feeling in response to my earlier comment.

Firstly, I added a massive grinning face to the end of my first sentence. Sorry, I thought that might have hinted at my sarcasm.

Yes, there are SOME nights where we might have a G&T followed two bottles of wine, and yes, when we're on holiday we might get through a bottle of gin a week as well as one or two bottles of wine a week. It suits us and our lifestyle. No, that's not the only way we relax... There's the raging hot sex, hiking, running and meditation too 😊.

hanketypankety · 20/08/2021 21:59

@MrsPworkingmummy

Christ, well we must have a massive problem in our house as we get through 2 bottles a night, not including the pre-dinner G&Ts Grin. We are on our holidays admittedly (teachers) but get through a bottle of gin a week and a few bottles of wine. We both need to relax after our children tire us out all day.
Yes , you have a huge problem!

Though tbf no amount of sarcasm, hot sex, hiking, running and meditation can mitigate against the effect on your livers and guts and cancer risk of drinking too much. G&T (love it, can’t drink it any more) and a bottle of wine each in one evening is binge drinking. If you’re regularly doing that a couple of nights a week, it’s just bad for you.

I didn’t want to be told either and then I got cancer. Of course, I could have been teetotal and got cancer, who knows. I stopped drinking for several years then, until first lockdown when in difficult personal circumstances I drank too much again. Within 3 months I had GERD and it took months to get rid of it.

I’m enjoying a Friday night glass of wine as I write. I’ll enjoy another one or two tomorrow. That’ll be it then until next Friday because I learned the hard way.

If what you said in your first post is the case, you are drinking too much.

Well that’s a massive climb down from your last post. Did you over exaggerate ? Two bottles of wine a night to now maybe one or two a week? And sarcasm is not usually denoted by a grinning face.

And raging hot sex, seriously?

Studies show that no amount of alcohol is safe.

If you are worried about it, then it's too much for you. Alcohol Lied to Me is a fantastic book if your looking to cut down.

I used to drink 2 bottles of wine a night for years, wake up in the morning feeling fine and got on with my day. I was also stuck in a never ending loop of depression, anxiety, food disorders and just a general low level dissatisfaction. It took me a LONG time to crawl myself out.

Now, i'm at the gym every day, feel 100% happier. I feel like I have my life back at 46. If you are spending time worrying about your alcohol intake then take a break to reevaluate how it's actually benefiting your life.

robotcollision · 21/08/2021 12:54

OP, it's a problem if it worries you. I drink about the same. Most nights one glass, some nights two and it's worrying because I'd prefer a few nights off each week, a few mornings with a totally clear head. (Doing Dry Jan shows you the difference between your head after a single glass the night before and your head after no alcohol at all. I notice the difference.)

One thing you could try is admitting you use it as a prop but swapping it for a healthier prop. A huge mug of tea or herbal tea if you feel stressed or low. A fancy mocktail that clearly marks the break between working day and evening unwinding. Would these be worth a try one or two nights a week?

No, they don't show that at all.

Good advice to take a break. I've done two weeks off the booze and am determined to change my drinking habits, will try and stick to being a sociable drinker from now on.

Borntobeamum · 21/08/2021 15:54

Op, would you get stressed if you didn’t have the drink?
My neighbour says she doesn’t have a problem but gets very twitchy if she’s delayed having her evening ‘topple’.
I saw her in the local coop and they didn’t have any gin! The look of panic on her face was priceless.
If you had to go without, would it be a problem.
This also is a question for anyone else.

sadperson16 · 21/08/2021 17:31

Yes,it would be a problem. But having the problem constantly circulating round my head is waring.
I have had most success by metaphorically sticking my fingers in my ears going la la la.

Do you start drinking at a particular time of day? Maybe change your routine? When it’s getting to wine o clock maybe go out for a walk with a podcast or music? Join a club or exercise class in the evenings if that’s your trigger times

RadcliffeLiverpoolUk · 17/01/2023 05:45

I've just been sat up reading through this an I just want to say I am all for the first comment! I am the same and I'm not a teacher! I go through wine an gin and I'm a good mum! thankyou for making the world more real! thankyou x

Love love love this! exactly the same.... thankyou for being honest! xxxx

SenseiOfDuty · 17/01/2023 05:53

@sadperson16 I don't think the problem is the drinking

I think the problem is the problem going round in your head that's making you depressed and that you're drinking to avoid

You can tell us about that too, if you want. I mean it might be a relief to try and see if the problem shrinks under the gaze of MN
