Is 2 bottles of wine a week dangerous?

I have been battling this for many a long year and I feel like trying to stop is causing me more trouble than the original problem.

Aged 63 so unlikely to get pregnant.

Is the wine making it worse? Are you using wine to not think about your worries? I mean you’re not drinking gallons, but just trying to understand your question.

Mum2jenny · 20/08/2021 19:26

I never drink and drive, but I can easily consume more than 2 bottles of wine a week, then add in the odd g&t and pint of cider at the local…..so I’m now a pisshead???

Dontwatchfootball · 20/08/2021 19:40

9 - 10 bottles of wine a bottle - 18 -20 units. Recommended guidelines =14 a week. More important though is why you are drinking and why it causes you problems to stop. If you cant manage without it, then you have a problem.

Dontwatchfootball · 20/08/2021 19:40

units not bottles

Mum2jenny · 20/08/2021 19:44

I drink because it gives me pleasure. I do not care about the government set limits as they are totally arbitrary.

sadperson16 · 20/08/2021 19:51

@Ostryga,yes.

Look at what the NHS says

Or don'r. They don't have any real scientific basis.

Newgirls · 20/08/2021 19:58

The research into cancer and alcohol is extensive. Just 7 units a week raises your risk of some cancers including breast by up to 25%. Higher than HRT.

It can also impact on sleep quality which in turn has health and mood impacts.

A couple of units a week is prob relaxing and enjoyable and beyond that not great 🤷‍♀️

Reallyreallyborednow · 20/08/2021 20:03

We both need to relax after our children tire us out all day

Is alcohol the only way you can relax?

What’s going on op? If you feel up to it there’s lots of people here that can point you in the right direction for support if needs be.

NeverTalkToStrangers · 20/08/2021 20:13

It’s about twenty units a week and the recommended amount is 14, so it’s going to raise your risk of various cancers noticeably but it’s highly unlikely to give you liver failure or alcoholic dementia.

Can you link to that research about cancer? All the ones I have seen have been much lower.
OverByYer · 20/08/2021 20:19

It’s not a massive amount but if it’s worrying you and you feel you can’t manage without it, then maybe you do need to cut down.
I don’t drink in the week but on a Friday evening can easily get through a bottle of cava to myself and sometimes the same on Saturday. I’m not proud of that but I drink the same as you. It doesn’t impact on my activity levels on the weekend abs I certainly look forward to popping the cork on Friday when I get in from work

DiscoDown21 · 20/08/2021 20:20

Well this hasn’t gone like a normal mumsnet drinking thread so far…..

Op if you feel it’s too much cut down. Don’t rely on other people to tell you it’s too much or not enough etc. They aren’t you they don’t have your knowledge of your health status etc.

We know alcohol isn’t good for us there is much research that points to it. But lots we do isn’t considered good for us either. You could cut down and see if it made you feel better? Gradually so it wasn’t as noticeable or smaller glasses. If you want to carry on then carry on…. Doesn’t sound like you want to though?

I'm a similar age and our chances of getting a non genetic breast cancer between now and age 70 are 3.49%. So out of 100 women 3.5 will probably develop breast cancer in the next 10 years. If drinking too much increases that risk by 25% it becomes 4.36%. So still more than a 95% probability you won't get breast cancer. That's pretty good odds.

I realise statistics are meaningless if you are one of the women who develops cancer but it's important to remember that a 25% increase in risk doesn't equate to a 25% increase in cases.

SheWoreYellow · 20/08/2021 20:27

@KingHiss

The "guidelines" are based on modelling by Sheffield University. As we have seen thanks to Covid, modelling is shite. As an aside Sheffield needed two goes to get a limit Public Health England were happy with, FOI requests show this.
That’s really interesting @KingHiss Do you know what the rejected limit was?
ohthestruggles · 20/08/2021 20:53

@MrsPworkingmummy

Christ, well we must have a massive problem in our house as we get through 2 bottles a night, not including the pre-dinner G&Ts Grin. We are on our holidays admittedly (teachers) but get through a bottle of gin a week and a few bottles of wine. We both need to relax after our children tire us out all day.
I'd say this sounds problematic Hmm I have a lot of 'drinkers' in my family, my dad is an alcoholic and I'm sure this is probably this is probably what he polishes off (to himself).
Dontwatchfootball · 20/08/2021 20:54

If you are feeling depressed, even a little alcohol will probably make it worse. Could you talk to your GP? You dont necessarily have to take medications, but perhaps access counselling? Sorry to hear you are having a hard time.

Wow that’s a lot. Are you both just sitting their wankered every single night?
Mum2jenny · 20/08/2021 20:58

Everyone needs to die sometime. You just need to decide which poisons you can accept in your life. My poison of choice is alcohol, may not be yours though!!

Ostryga · 20/08/2021 21:00
@Ostryga,suppose you would call it depression
If you need to talk I’d start a new thread so you get the support you need, rather than this one.

I’m here if you want to chat, seems to be a lot going on for you. Will it help to talk about it?

Northernsoullover · 20/08/2021 21:06

I don't think it would impact your physical health too much but obviously the less the better. However alcohol does impact your mental health quite significantly in small amounts. I gave up because I was quite anxious all the time which pretty much stopped when I quit.
I recommend reading Alcohol Lied to Me by Craig Beck which not only explains why alcohol has a profound effect on your mental health but it helps you stop drinking without effort.
