DS Needs a tooth out, Help.

I took DS to the dentist today to get his back tooth packed but unfortunately it needs to be pulled. I was quite nervous but the dentist explained to him what was happening (he's only 5). She put the gel on his gum to numb it then did the injection. He was hysterical. There were three dental nurses trying to calm him down and I'm cuddling him, trying to get him calm. After half an hour, the dentist said that he'll need to be referred for a general anasthetic.

Has anyone else had this and has it been okay. He finally calmed down completely after about an hour of being back home from dentist. He needs this tooth removed but I can't see there being any way of him letting them anywhere near his mouth if he's awake. I was upset seeing him so upset and he looked terrified. I felt like such a terrible mum. All his other teeth are in really good nick and the dentist can't understand why this one has decayed and broke. We brush his teeth regularly and he's had check ups since he was about 1.

Damn fine timing you have here gscrym! Ds2 had 2 molars out under GA yesterday. It took 1/2 hour from going into theatre to coming back to the ward. He was sent home with antibiotics, calpol and codeine (he can't have nurofen). He hasn't needed any painkillers at all. HTH
