Can anyone suggest what I might have done to myself? Have had knee pain all day which has become worse and is now agonising. The outer side of my upper thigh is also very painful when I press it. I can’t lie on either side in bed and need a stick to walk to the loo. Have tried ibroprufen, ice, heat, all of which take the edge off briefly and then wear off. Feeling v sorry for myself.

Have you been sat cross legged, by any chance.?

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 03/08/2021 00:27

Have you had a covid jab lately? Could it be a blood clot? I’d call NHS and ask for advice rather than on here tbh Flowers

LaBelleSauvage123 · 03/08/2021 00:31

No crossed legged sitting and had my Covid jabs ages ago. Did do a ‘1000 steps in 10 min’ workout from YouTube on Sat, but it was low impact.

Think I’d call the nhs advice line

Fadeout83 · 03/08/2021 00:37

I’d call in too. Is there redness where it hurts?

LowlytheWorm · 03/08/2021 00:42

Any swelling or redness? What have you done today or yesterday? Have you tried ice?
If it’s genuinely agonising you really
Should call 111.

Sounds like an injury I had a few years ago. Inflammation of iliotibial band. Official name is iliotibial band syndrome. Got so bad so quick I couldn’t lift my leg or bend my knee. Took a few weeks to heal up. Ibuprofen and paracetamol and a weird thigh shake massage prescribed by physio. Still flares up now but I recognise when it’s starting and can knock it on the head very quick now. GP and physio are your best bet, op.

alexdgr8 · 03/08/2021 00:49

is it swollen, red, hot.
any tracking signs up the body.
even if none of the above, please ring 111.
that's what they're for.
good luck and let us know how you get on.

I’ve had knee pain. My GP didn’t physically see me. So I got fed up. Saw my BUPA consultant through dhs work. MRI showed I had worn my knee down and damaged my tendons. I’d have waited an age for the NHS.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 03/08/2021 01:04

No swelling, redness or tracking. I think the illiotibial band thing is a possibility ( just googled symptoms). Think the knee pain is possibly referred, either from thigh or lower back. Have had facet joint problems twice before ( years ago) so could be that?

Pain has subsided now I’m lying still on my back but can’t sleep like this and still can’t turn over

Sounds like it could be muscular. Rest and anti-inflammatories. Hot bath can sometimes help if you can get in and out safely or a hot water bottle on the area.

If so, when the inflamation subsides I would go for a massage - I don't mean a spa air-fairy stroke you gentley until you go to sleep sort of massage - I mean a massage by a properly trained sports massage therapist.

If you have a tight IBT, foam rolling can also really help but it hurts like hell to start with and only improves if you stick to doing it every day or very regularly. DO NOT do foam rolling at the moment or if you are in pain btw - just something for the future.
