.....in mosquito bites and I can't take anymore of it, frankly.
Apart from the odd bite on holidays abroad in previous years, I've never really had a problem with them. But for at least the last six weeks they've been attacking me and seem to find me especially tasty as DH has one or two but I have at least 20!
I can't help scratching them and my arms and legs are a state.
I know I could just Google products and of course I have, but there's nothing like unbiased opinion so please can you recommend some things that really, really work?
I am hoping for something to prevent new bites and also the best thing to put on existing, sore huge bites!
Much love, gratitude and my first born (if you want a sarky teen) posted out to the winner! 😁

I find Fenistil works well - keep it in the fridge and put it on cold!

IShouldProbablyHooverMore · 27/07/2021 16:38

I used OTC hydrocortisone cream on bites, along with ice packs & aloe vera. I have over 40 on my legs, varying sizes, with some really nasty ones. Try and avoid heat as it makes the itching worse. I also wore gym leggings and that seemed to help when every other fabric irritated the hell out of them.
As for preventing, jungle spray helps a bit. Lavender or lemon oil are apparently natural repellents, but they didn't work for me. The mozzies this year are f***s.

CorrieALanus · 27/07/2021 16:41

Decent natural repellent
Always burn mosquito coils
Ice on bites
Mind over matter (ignore and they will stop bothering you)

Steroid cream like hydrocortisone, only steroids really work. I borrow ds eczema cream.

endofthelinefinally · 27/07/2021 16:44

Take an antihistamine and apply tiger balm.

TotoAnnihiliation · 27/07/2021 16:51

I'm following this with internet as the mosquito bites I have had this year are strange. The first two I had flare up again and become incredibly itchy and raised whenever I get a new bite.

All the OTC hydrocortisone treatments that offer relief aren't working. I've taken antihistamines to no avail. I just want the itching to stop!!

My dd dabbed hers with apple cider vinegar (one with the mother) when she had about 15 swollen red bites on her legs because it had worked for a friend, and it did calm the swelling and itching down

Wishingwell75 · 27/07/2021 17:01

Thank you all so much!
I have tried the usual lavender oil etc but didn't work for me either. So, ice, apple cider vinegar here I come followed by all the other suggestions!
Definitely something extreme about these horrors this year, I agree. X

Buy anything with DEET for prevention.

Sacreblue · 27/07/2021 17:05

Have a look at mosquito magnet website, it has a list of foods meant to help make you less attractive to the little suckers.

No idea if any work or not but if its food you’d like anyway it’s worth a go.

SpringCrocus · 27/07/2021 17:07

Incognito spray/cream. Totally natural, works a treat to keep bitey things away

SoddingWeddings · 27/07/2021 17:10

Am also COVERED with bites. DH wa worried it was fleas, but it's definitely mozzies. I swell up, which IS GREAT when the fuckers have bitten your forehead 🙄

I'm now using DEET before bed as I can't take any more.

My aunt recommended using baking powder with a dab of water to make it into a paste then coat each bite, leave it on for 10mins then wash off with water. It's taken the worst of the itch away, but done nothing for the swelling.....

sandycloud · 27/07/2021 17:13

I use neurofen gel on bites. It stops the redness and itching. I try and use skin so soft by Avon as a repellent. Apparently they can't market it as repellent. It has oils in.

amatsip · 27/07/2021 17:16

Skin so soft amazing stuff keeps them at bay

lljkk · 27/07/2021 17:25

Forget topical remedies, you need a solid oral anti-histamine. Chemist is your friend.

Mozzies don't do much to me but I can swell up in response to midges. Fleas have also put me thru hell on occasion. Put the insect repellent in your hair as well, btw.

Leah2005 · 27/07/2021 17:33

What @amatsip said. Avon skin so soft for some random reason

SoddingWeddings · 27/07/2021 17:45

Avon skin so soft does nothing for me at so. And oral and topical antihistamines aren't touching these fecking bites.

Howshouldibehave · 27/07/2021 17:49

Eurax is really brilliant for itching.

Get decent mosquito repellent with Deet next time. Don’t bother with Avon ‘Skin So Soft’ shit-it’s recommended on here all the time (possibly by MLM Avon reps!) doesn’t work and you will smell absolutely rancid for nothing!

cloudysummerday · 27/07/2021 17:52

I read on here the other day to put a hot spoon on bites to stop the itching and it does seem to work

TheLeadbetterLife · 27/07/2021 17:57

I take a loratadine antihistamine at night before bed - seems to soothe the itching.

I agree about the weird flare ups and intense itching from some mozzies this year (I’m in Portugal and we seem to get different types at different times).

A friend of mine swears by eating marmite to put them off biting. No idea if this works - made no difference for me.

katcatkat · 27/07/2021 17:58

Best thing for mosquito bites is Eurax cream it stops the itching for 6 hours i get huge welts and that combined with an oral antihistamine tablet brings them right down.

DinosaurDiana · 27/07/2021 18:00

Eurax anti itch cream. It actually works.

wishingitwasfriday · 27/07/2021 18:39

Citronella balm. Rubbish between hands and then apply over body. Reapply as needed. Has saved me this year.

showmethegin · 27/07/2021 19:03

Rub the inside of a banana skin on them

MBM18 · 27/07/2021 19:41

Supposedly the scent of lemon repels them so you could try washing with lemon scented soap.
