.....in mosquito bites and I can't take anymore of it, frankly.
Apart from the odd bite on holidays abroad in previous years, I've never really had a problem with them. But for at least the last six weeks they've been attacking me and seem to find me especially tasty as DH has one or two but I have at least 20!
I can't help scratching them and my arms and legs are a state.
I know I could just Google products and of course I have, but there's nothing like unbiased opinion so please can you recommend some things that really, really work?
I am hoping for something to prevent new bites and also the best thing to put on existing, sore huge bites!
Much love, gratitude and my first born (if you want a sarky teen) posted out to the winner! 😁

Ow that you have them nurofen, an antihistamine and tiger balm will help.

Skin so soft works as a good deterrent for future.

Wishingwell75 · 27/07/2021 23:49

Wow, came back and so many suggestions, surely some of them will work for me!
Thank you so much to every single one of you beauties who took the time to comment, it's really cheered me up. X

It's really interesting about the marmite theory - lots of Vit B in that and I know either B1 or B3 is good to take a few weeks before going abroad to dissuade these buggers from munching on you but like I said I just have never received as many bites or reacted like this before and I am mid 40's.
So, yes going forward I will be eating foods to deter them, spraying, pasting and bathing in all of your suggestions - probably one at a time but who knows; then I will round the day off with some garlic butter antihistamines!
No - one will be coming near me, let alone those blood sucking freaks! 😁

I agree the hot spoon thing works. There is a clicker thing on Amazon that heats up and does the same but seems less likely to burn yourself. Might have to repeat it.

Also antihistamine and 1% hydrocortisone cream.

Do all of it as soon as you get bitten.

QueenBee52 · 27/07/2021 23:59

Eat more Red Meat or get B12 injections OP.. it'll help stop you getting bitten 🌸

Gardentiger · 28/07/2021 00:02

As soon as you notice a bite, clean it will rubbing alcohol.

Use vagisil cream for the itching.

Deux · 28/07/2021 00:06

Sympathies, I react terribly. I use Jungle Formula in roll on format to prevent. Wilko’s do a bite ease spray that amazingly works for me and it’s only £1.50.

I used to live in the tropics and would spray the bedroom with an amazing spray called Doom Grin. You could do similar with a spray called Indorex which is ostensibly for fleas.

TheOnlyKoiInAPondOfGoldfish · 28/07/2021 00:09

My doctor said the reason antihistamines didn't seem to to be helping me (large raised bites which turn into blisters) is that our reaction to mozzies is not a histamine reaction. A histamine reaction is a rash - these are localised around the bite.

Analgesics like ibruprofen and paracetamol were his recommendation, along with calamine lotion. I do use the analgesics, but swap the calamine suggestion for slathering Aloe Vera gel on.

SusannahSophia · 28/07/2021 00:21

Repellent with Deet is the only stuff that works for me. I spray it on outside as it stinks. Eurax cream is ok, hydrocortisone if really nasty.

Dddccc · 28/07/2021 00:41

Eat garlic they hate it

FictionalCharacter · 28/07/2021 02:49

I get tortured by biting insects every year - I get bitten 100x more than anyone else I know and end up covered in ugly red lumps. I hate DEET, it stinks and irritates my skin. The best repellent I’ve ever found is Alfresco lotion, used as a body lotion, and their cologne. Smells lovely and really works, even for me. I’ve just stocked up for this year.

For the bites, calamine or a dab of toothpaste. No idea why toothpaste should work but it does give some relief from the itching.

Tanfastic · 28/07/2021 05:24

I went to an event in a Forrest a couple of years ago on the hottest day of the year and ended up counting over 100 bites on my body after that. I honestly didn't know what to do with myself Confused,

The only things that provided any relief were a cup of boiling water, place a teaspoon inside to heat it up then place hot teaspoon on bite until you start to feel relief. It hurts a bit but it provides me with relief from the itch for a while. Then just keep repeating till they go.

Also Eurax cream and ice packs but the spoon thing I found the best.

MayorGundersonsDogRufus · 28/07/2021 08:35

Put a mosquito net around your bed
Wear repellent during the day - most importantly afternoon/early evening
Antisan cream as soon as you notice a bite and antihistamine tablets to stop the reaction
Those plug in oil things help
Citronella candles

These are the things we did while living in Spain to combat the little beasts.

Tiger balm is good but it stains.

jmscp · 28/07/2021 08:41

These!

They literally saved my life on numerous occasions, they love me the mozzies. One of these on the ankle and one on my wrist and they don't bother me! Grin they aren't the most stylish but I absolutely don't care Grin

I've got no good suggestions for how to treat the bites as I'm another one that antihistamines don't seem to work for, nor steroid cream! I react so badly Sad

I am absolutely covered
helpfulperson · 28/07/2021 09:09

I take antihistamines every day during the summer and use hydrocortisone cream. For prevention jungle formula and mossi coils.

Ajl46 · 28/07/2021 09:15

I saw a Dr Michael Mosley programme once that suggested mosquitoes are attracted to feet & start at your feet and work up. On that basis, wearing shoes rather than sandals can stop you being bitten in the first place.

I really wish this was the case for me. They tend to go for my legs first. This time, for the first time ever, they bit me through my clothes.
Ajl46 · 28/07/2021 09:17

Think it was this programme www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01w8nph

SoddingWeddings · 28/07/2021 09:20

Not sure wearing shoes in bed is going to do much....

I sprayed DEET on last night, not checked fully for bites yet, and I've now bought a plug in mosquito killer from Lidl, so we'll see how that does!

I don’t think mosquitos are that clever or forward thinking! In my experience, they just flap around and bite anything they fancy! Arms, legs in particular. I’ve been bitten through jeans and fabric chairs!
Throughabushbackwards · 28/07/2021 09:43

Stingose spray is an Australian's go-to bite relief spray recommendation.

Available on Amazon - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stingose-Spray-Swelling-Treatment-Australia/dp/B077D2QGG8

This citronella spray works to keep them away. I spray the foot of the bedcovers each night and give a few puffs in the air a few minutes before bedtime - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01MXIMFB7?ref=ppxpt22mobbbprod_image

Erictheavocado · 28/07/2021 09:47

Eurax is brilliant for itching. Interesting to read about the b vitamins - my mum swears that a serving of marmite every day prevents mozzies biting.

Howshouldibehave · 28/07/2021 09:48

Stingose spray is one I’ve not heard of before-I can’t seem to find it for sale over here though!?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/07/2021 09:50

I’m a walking snack shack as far as mosquitos are concerned. I get a really bad reaction, they swell up really badly and itch like bastards.

Hot teaspoon has been like a miracle. Honestly it’s transformed my life. From days of misery they’ve gone in a day.

Bert2e · 28/07/2021 09:56

Another hot spoon fan here, it's then only thing that works.

MadameHomais · 28/07/2021 09:58

I take yeast tablets and garlic tablets hopefully to make me less tasty to the little blighters.
I’m not sure it works though!
