Panicking - IBS bout and party tomorrow!

I had a stressful event a couple of months ago that has triggered my IBS. I've been a bit better the last couple of days but tonight it's come back with a vengeance. Literally food and drink is going straight through me.

I'm due to go to a party tomorrow night and I'm starting to think about crying off. I can't go while my stomach is this bad. But the host is relying on me being there! She's a good friend and I really don't want to let her down.

What can I do? Imodium or anything similar? Any advice gratefully received.

Have you tried any of the over the counter remedies for IBS? Buscopan?

Excitedforxmas · 23/07/2021 00:17

A chip butty is always a good call @Ludovici but I probably need something a bit more medicinal right now Grin
Is Imodium or Buscopan better? I haven't tried either. I've had what I call an "anxious stomach" for years but it's much worse right now than it has ever been. Can I take both?! Or will that mean prune juice for the rest of the weekend lol.
I've not taken anything before, I've just kind of dealt with it. But because I'm going to be at my friend's house I feel like I need to do something.

I have IBS-D and I use loperamide (Imodium) occasionally to get through it. Buscopan just doesn’t work for me.

CrackOnOrGoHome · 23/07/2021 01:20

Ok, thanks. Will go for the Imodium tomorrow - wish me luck Sad

This will sound ridiculous too, but bare with me: try eating a couple of those gut health yoghurts, maybe space them out a couple of hours. I think I can share this with my IBS sisters, I literally would just wee out of my back passage- sorry for the TMI but that's exactly what it was.
But since eating these yoghurts and a banana for good measure I've actually had real proper bowel movements, it was almost alien to me to actually have to exert pressure, when before all I had to do was sit on a toilet and my gut would explode. I really hope all any of the advice from me and Pp helps.

Imodium is the answer. Take 2 a few hours before the party so you have time to take more if needed, just don't exceed the recommended dose. Buscopan does nothing for me but you have any pain or bloating peppermint tea works for me

Catquestion · 23/07/2021 02:31

I used to take Imodium when I had an IBS flare up before exams.

Incidentally, coming off the combined pill seemed to cure my IBS and I’ve not had a flare up in years (touch wood)

CrackOnOrGoHome · 24/07/2021 00:33

Thanks for your help everyone, I got some imodium this morning and took a couple, then one again before I went out. It worked a treat and I had a lovely time at the party Gin

👍

Great! I find Imodium always a good back up (pardon the pun) for such situations. Buscopan is more for calming the cramps and spasms and takes a bit of time to work ime but I find it really helpful in getting things back to normal without feeling like I’m constantly being kicked in the stomach.

User1357 · 24/07/2021 00:46

Take two co codamol! Works every time.

S0upertrooper · 24/07/2021 01:48

This won't work for your party but might work long term. I take a daily probiotic, the kind you have to keep in the fridge and find that keeps me ticking over when life isn't overly stressful.

Lately I've felt quite low and have become stressed and a bit depressed so my GP prescribed an anti depressant. My IBS has improved ten fold as I think it might be affected by my mood.

isettled · 24/07/2021 02:21

@S0upertrooper some antidepressants can be prescribed to treat the symptoms of IBS. I think there's 3 fluoxetine, citalopram and amitriptyline. I've taken amitriptyline solely for my IBS symptoms for around 3 years and it's made a huge difference.

They have the complete opposite effect on me! I can manage most of my other IBS triggers in small, well-spaced-out portions (like pasta once a week but no more), but those ‘healthy gut’ yoghurts just destroy me. They were actually the first thing that ever made me realise I had a problem.
