WTF has happened, my arse has exploded

This was totally unexpected. I took a glycerin suppository yesterday evening, as I’ve done several times (couple of times a month). I’m dieting so get a tiny bit constipated, and it helps shift things along. Usually have no issues at all.

Well I woke up in the early hours and it all exploded. Wind, awful tummy pains, massive bouts of normal poo but this got increasingly runny, ended up with liquid diarrhoea. Thought I was going to throw up but managed not to.

This morning there was no more poo (I must’ve lost pounds Shock) but I noticed quite a lot of bright red blood, a bit mucousy. Tummy still really sore and still feel like I need to go and should be straining.

Is this a bug? Some weird reaction to the suppository? They’re supposed to be mild! I do have small piles so maybe these got irritated. Have taken paracetamol which has helped a bit. Bleeding has stopped. Should I be doing anything else?

Bit scared tbh!

Could be a bug.
Drink lots of water to rehydrate.

Halfwaytoholiday · 22/07/2021 10:02

Taking regular strong laxatives isn't a part of safe dieting, I would have thought.

StopGo · 22/07/2021 10:10

You were probably a lot more constipated than you thought. The suppository shifted the solid blockage allowing all the build up caught behind it to follow through. The 'effort' may well have burst a few capillaries.

Drink plenty of fluids. Add more fibre to your diet. Would be worth speaking to your GP as any sudden change in bowel habits needs mentioning.

Hoppinggreen · 22/07/2021 10:12

If you need a suppository a couple of times a month then you need to look at your diet

Lemons1571 · 22/07/2021 10:34

Is the occasional glycerin suppository very strong? I was under the impression these were safe to use daily, so thought one as needed every couple of weeks wasn’t a big deal.

I did try movicol (over the counter), but it seemed to result in endless small amounts of sludge, rather than a proper poo.

I suspect that I was probably far more constipated than I would ever have realised! I am going to add more fibre to my diet.

God my tummy is sore. In a kind of aftermath wtf was that way!

Did you say you "took" a glycerine suppository instead of putting it up your bottom? Or did you mean that you did put it in the right place and didn't ingest it?

ABitOfAShitShow · 22/07/2021 10:46

A glycerin suppository is not strong and, although it's a laxative, it's not in the category that would be unreasonable when dieting. It just draws water into the bowel and shifts things along when you're a bit bunged up. I use them almost every day as I have chronic constipation and it does nothing to my weight.

Lemons1571 · 22/07/2021 10:51

@Unicorn34 it went in the right hole!! Grin

I was just taken by surprise, as usually it shifts a normal-ish poo. Never had such a reaction before. And a pile of blood / mucous is scary!

Maybe should mention that the constipation seems to have occurred as a result of not eating much, so rationally I guessed there would be less poo produced. Hence the suppository. It’s not that I’m taking laxative thinking it will lose a few pounds.

I was exactly the same last night and no laxatives. I think you've got a big.

BunnyRuddington · 22/07/2021 10:53

*bug

Lemons1571 · 22/07/2021 10:54

It could be a bug, as the wave of nausea was also odd. Hope the rest of the family don’t catch it.

Maybe test for Covid? Diarrhoea can be a symptom.

Sillysuzie · 22/07/2021 11:02

I would take a covid test. Stomach upset/vomiting/diarrhea is a symptom of the delta variant

SilentPanic · 22/07/2021 11:02

Are you OK OP? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but this rang alarm bells for me as someone who has suffered with an ED- I'd eat very small amounts and even then only of specific foods, and would become very constipated. I had the horrible pain, blood and mucous too, which were signs of a stomach ulcer due to undereating. (I WAS eating, lots of greens, some seeds and some meat, but nothing else.) Please give your body a bit of what it needs right now, and take care!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 22/07/2021 11:08

If you're not eating much, and therefore your volume of poo is less, why do you need laxatives? Surely it's going to work it's way through, just in smaller volumes?

niceupthedanceagain · 22/07/2021 11:11

Sounds like a bug

eandz13 · 22/07/2021 11:18

It sounds like the suppository has irritated your bowel, tenesmus is the term for what you're describing (the needing to poo but nothing there, I get it when I take antibiotics, so annoying) and it's usually a result of an inflamed bowel. I'd consider a fibre supplement instead of a laxative to help keep things moving nicely Smile

Lemons1571 · 22/07/2021 11:21

@SilentPanic that’s really interesting as that is my diet! I eat a lot of salad. Should I add carbs?

Not sure about covid. Kids had the delta variant weeks back and it didn’t present anything like this (we finished isolation a couple of weeks ago). Would covid present with diarrhoea alone, and then no further symptoms appear?

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername
The volume is less when I do go. Trouble is I don’t go regularly. So I wait a few days, feel bunged up, wait it out, sometimes it shifts a bit on its own, but occasionally I eventually use a suppository to give it an initial shove.

Certainly worked last night. Got no intestines left!

Like fibogel?

I think you should speak to your doctor. It's probably an internal haemmoroid but you have to be sensible. If it was dark blood it's an emergency.

Lemons1571 · 22/07/2021 11:26

The blood was bright red. Didn’t look closely as had only just woken up, but it looked gloopy like it had mucous in it. No I don’t have dark blood or dark sticky tar like stools.

minipie · 22/07/2021 11:29

This sounds very like a bug DD had a week or two ago (possibly norovirus)

Suspect the suppository is a red herring. But agree it’s not healthy to be using them as a regular thing, your bowel can end up dependent on them.

RichTeaCheddars · 22/07/2021 11:35

Maybe mention it to your GP. But seems like you were more constipated than you thought and the diarrhea caused the bleeding. It can be also cause some nausea eg with abdominal cramps.

Could you add more fibre to your diet? I find psyllium husk tablets helpful. I get it from Holland and Barrett. I don't take as much as pot says and it's helpful. It's soluble and insoluble fiber so bulks stool out and draws water in to make it easier to pass.

littleredberries · 22/07/2021 11:38

Switch to psyllium husk. There are no side effects.
