Worried about metronidazole resistance/side effects - can any dentist/gp/pharmacist advise?

I have tried to take metronidazole for a gum infection. I took one tablet this morning and after an hour I was unable to think properly, was very dizzy, sensitive to light and felt horribly sick. I'm just starting to feel a bit more normal now, when the 2nd tablet would be due. The children finish school today and there's absolutely no chance I'd be able to look after them on this medication. I can barely function. I called the dentist who said to stop taking it, which I have, but I have a lot of anxiety about antibiotics. I'm scared that now I've taken one tablet and then stopped that the bacteria will become resistant and the antibiotics won't work if I need them again. How likely is this to happen?
The dentist said that because they cleaned the area yesterday that might get rid of it on it's own, along with salt water rinses / corsodyl. Wish I hadn't bothered trying the metronidazole now!
