I went to the the GP on friday because I had swollen lymph nodes that were tender. He said I had tonsillitis so gave me amoxicillin. i didn't get any symptoms until saturday but still took the amox on friday anyway.

The thing is today I cant even drink never mind eat and my lips are covered in cold sores. In the past when I have had tonsillitis after a few days of a/b it had improved but it seems to be getting worse this time.

any ideas? I know the doc will be really busy today and will stuggle to get an appt I just dont know what else to do

It's a bit late now but most GPs usually have an emergency appts clinic and will see you same day if you call first thing. I would still ring them, or call NHS direct for advice.

i'm just recovering from bacterial tonsilitis! i've never had it before, and its knocked me sideways....
my doctor said on monday that i shouldn't have antibiotics and to ride it out.
on tuesday night i thought i was dying. my vision was blurry, my face was bright red and flaky, my neck was the size of a tree trunk, i couldn't swallow and breathing was difficult. the only way i could have painkillers was to pinch my leg or pull my hair so that i coudl deflect the pain away from the pain in my throat from swallowing!!
i got some antibiotics on tuesday and i'm already much better. i was given ethyrmicin not amoxycillin though.
the only tip i can pass on is to cry down the phone at your doctors surgery for an appt - that's what i did and i was seen immediately. or better still go down there and beg!
i was also told to take nurofen for the swelling and paracetamol for the pain (its ok to take them together as they are different kinds of medicine).
hope you're feeling better, it really is the grimmest sickness i've ever had!
take care

sounds far more like the herpes virus - can give sore mouth, throat, ulcers??
