My eldest ds 21 in 6 weeks has dropped over 2st he is on the toilet in excess of 10 times a day , he had an appointment on Wednesday at the hospital where the put a camera up his bottom and took a biopsy. he did have gas and air but since then he hasn't been able to keep food down and I'm noticing just how much weight he is dropping every day , I walked into his house tonight and nearly burst into tears it was like seeing my dad sat there before he died , we are just waiting now for results to come through . I don't know why I'm writing this other than I need to get it off my chest and don't really feel like I can talk to anyone about it at the moment

I’m sorry that’s sounds really worrying. Hopefully they be able sort him out once results are in. It really is worst when you don’t know what you are dealing with

Sounds like they suspect inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's, ulcerative colitis etc)? I assume you mean the usual biopsies of the gut wall?

If so, and he has IBD then he needs treatment in order to feel better and then things will start to improve. If that's what is going on, which it sounds like although you don't say how long he has been unwell, then tinkering with his diet and making food suggestions won't do a lot. IBD is a problem with the immune system attacking the gut, it's not a diet problem or food intolerance (although there can be easier/better/problematic foods but these vary from person to person).

If he can't manage proper food then protein shakes like fortisip would be a good idea. Even the weight watchers shakes would be helpful (take a look at the nutritional info for them - they're not just calories but minerals and vitamins too).

It can take a few days after a camera test for the gut to calm back down to how it was before as it is a bit of a shock and they pump it up so they can see what they're doing. Don't panic on account of that.

Follow-up conversations already planned for Thursday means they are taking it seriously. Things are happening now.

Feel free to use this space to talk if you find it helps.

@Akire he has been complaining of the toilet issues for about 2 months but I put it down to him eating crap and drinking energy drinks which he stopped with about 6 weeks ago which is when the weight loss started , we aren't tinkering with his diet it's just trying to find something which he will eat and hopefully stay inside him

Sending hugs. How is he today? Get him to a and e. Don’t waste time. Flowers

Yes sounds like colitis or some other IBD. Try getting him to start by having probiotics until your tests come through. If it is ulcerative colitis or similar, they will be able to give him medication to stabilise.the other poss is good intolerances. My friends girl was diagnosed with coeliac disease. At his age it’s unlikely to be anything too sinister so wait till all the tests come in and take it from there.
