Diet & broken limbs/limited mobility (Terrified of weight gain)

Hello all,

I'm 3 weeks post bimalleolar Ankle fracture and 2 weeks post surgery to fix the the break and dislocation.

I'm usually very very active (i did this while indoor rock climbing fgs Hmm ) I used to be very overweight 16st now 10st and thankfully I've lost my desire for things like white pasta and chips/crisps since the break.

I just cant treat myself at the moment as I feel I don't deserve it. adjusted my diet to low (ish) carb - berries and protein yogurt, fish and salad for lunch and chicken with greens in the evening. snacking on nuts or low sugar protein bar. And of course no alcohol due to meds/thinners

Has anyone else been through similar and found diet played a massive part? did you eat your usual pre-break diet? did you lose or gain?

Trying to enjoy some sun outside and the flipping wasps keep swarming around! I hate
Them and not able to make a quick getaway!

Lushmetender · 14/07/2021 16:32

How is everyone? It’s warm here today and
My cast is doing my head in! Not sure if the heat is causing swelling but it feels a bit tight today! Anyone else getting that? Had hoped
It would be loosening off.
Gah! Feeling panicky!

Evenstar · 14/07/2021 16:46

It is very humid, my foot feels more comfortable after getting it redressed yesterday as the original dressing was falling to bits. The wound looked really good which was encouraging.

Lushmetender · 14/07/2021 16:54

That’s good Evenstar- why did
You need surgery on it? I hate
Having all
This time to think!

Evenstar · 14/07/2021 17:08

It was to have a bunion removed, it was quite bad, the toe had started to cross over the second toe and the lump on the side of my foot was rubbing even in wide fitting shoes to the point of bleeding.

I was referred last July, but not seen until March this year, but the consultant said it was beginning to get arthritis and filled the consent form out there and then. It was quicker than I expected after that, but I think they are trying to get day cases done to get the waiting figures down.

I did try to go private before Christmas, but my date for January was cancelled as the private hospital was full of NHS patients, so when they contacted me in March I was already on the waiting list.

My poor friend last year had deteriorated so much with the delays due to COVID that she had to have her second toe broken and reset too, so I feel quite fortunate.

Lushmetender · 14/07/2021 17:18

Ok ! Great that’s it fixed. My mum has really bad RA and needs everything fixed. She’s been too scared to get anything done despite being in pain since her 50s. Must be who I get my fear of surgery from!

Evenstar · 14/07/2021 17:38

@Lushmetender that’s a shame that your mum feels that way , when I was in hospital there was a lady in her 80’s with RA having a shoulder replacement and several ladies zipping up and down the ward after hip and knee replacement saying just the relief from the pain was great.

I am in more pain at the moment obviously but look forward to an improvement eventually.

Lushmetender · 14/07/2021 17:43

Yes think she’s left it too late! She needs new knees and her toes broken to straighten them! Not sure she’d survive the experience. She won’t take pain meds hardly and also refused physio. A v bad patient

Lushmetender · 15/07/2021 14:06

How is everyone today? Another hot one! Just had a couple of work meetings. Only 11 days till next hospital appt and DH says he needs to work that day! So going to have to see if family or friend can take me! Do not want to delay the appointment further!

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 15/07/2021 15:38

just window shopping via tinternet!

im always tempted to buy but delivery costs are extortionate to me,.

grocery shopping in my area is 2-3 days delivery as dp is not great at getting what i need

Lushmetender · 15/07/2021 15:53

Boris - grocery or other shopping? I just got another dress From sea salt which is nice and light. Shows my cast off perfectly! Managed to get 30% off with a discount code. We had ordered a chefs masterclass from wellocks! Great ingredients but will still cooking only the main by 1030 pm. By then I was past hunger and needed my bed! We have the starter and dessert to make tonight!

Weather in absolutely gorgeous but an hour in the sun at 5pm - yes after mad dog and English men go inside and I really felt my cast was unbearably tight. Must be swelling in the heat but can’t keep inside all the time!

Doing my teams appraisals at work.!3’down, 6 to go! They ask me how my ankle is and I choke up! Need to really get my big girls pants on but desperate to heal and get on my feed again!

Evenstar · 15/07/2021 15:59

I think it is really hard when you are normally busy and self sufficient to have to sit back and let others do things for you.

Lushmetender · 15/07/2021 16:03

Yes Evenstar- it is! We have a busy household with dogs, children and both working full time usually. It’s hard enough getting round to housework normally but now I can do nothing and house is a tip! We’d like to get a cleaner but they are hard to come by. Even if you get a good one, they usually last a few weeks. Think there’s too many other good jobs to be had than cleaning!

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 15/07/2021 16:09

i've also asked if i can work from home but its very difficult to find something for me to do - I work in X-ray!

The only thing keeping my chin up is 2months sick pay. but its running out in two weeks xx

OP posts:
Lushmetender · 15/07/2021 16:23

Boris lol! X-ray! How ironic! I have worked from
Home for over 10 years! After one hour sitting with lap top table in bed and my bum is numb! I can’t go to my desk as it’s a rolling chair on a wooden floor! You can imagine the scene of not quite making the chair plus I’d need something to keep my leg elevated! I am usually client facing so hard when your hair is greasy and you feel unwashed!

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 15/07/2021 16:33

yep!

I actually took a picture of my ankle while on the way to the hospital and said - I guess I wont be in tomorrow. Working in a hospital has made the experience strange as I work with the consultants/physio i'm under! my fave ortho consultant did my op too.

Lushmetender · 15/07/2021 16:54

So boris you’re in the know of how long it can take to heal then! My old neighbour who moved back to IE is an orthopaedic nurse
So she said I was unlucky!

I just can’t understand it. My kids had lockdown and then since are happy to be in their rooms all day and night and play on phone and computers. I’m being driven mad by being in my room most of the day! They are preteen so are getting to that age! Trying to encourage my daughter to get some fresh air! Gah!

Lushmetender · 15/07/2021 17:12

My line of work is clinical trials. It had got Uber busy with not just the usual trials but also the COVID trials. We had to undergo a significant recruitment drive to hire more staff and of course it is ongoing due to not only other covid vaccines and drugs being created but also the booster vaccines! Truth be told I needed to slow down as we’d been so busy and just barely surviving after all the lockdowns! But wish I could have slowed down by NOT this!

Lushmetender · 15/07/2021 17:25

Gosh trying to enjoy the sun but my neighbour are coughing away! They are just back from abroad! They don’t sound good!

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 15/07/2021 17:45

We have my stepson Fri to Mon and I can guarantee he will just want to be in bed for the entire 96hrs. Drives me insane.
My DD is very active and outdoorsy.

We do have a cleaner every other week, they really blitz through, 3 of them come and hoover, dust and do bathroom and kitchen. The only thing is I feel I have to tidy up before they come, they tell me off though and say there’s no need! I found them through a personal recommendation so that might be worth trying if you know anyone else who has one?

Our previous cleaners just stopped working in March last year and we paid them part wages for over 6 months and we didn’t hear from them for over a year. I am currently waiting assessment for fibromyalgia and it became urgent that I had some help so I asked around.

Evenstar · 15/07/2021 19:43

@Lushmetender I was on a COVID vaccine trial!

Lushmetender · 15/07/2021 21:32

Would love that! We had one from a company that set up during lock down but as soon as they could go back to day job they were off😐! We need volunteers Evenstar / thank you! I can’t due to conflicts of interest but I have had my vaccines thankfully

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 16/07/2021 12:42

Struggling today, Ortho Appoinment isnt until the 27th July and im hitting the anxiety now of "what if the fib isnt healing? what if i have to wear another cast?

I'm feeling fed up now. I even cry as I just cant face doing anymore tinzaparin injections,

OP posts:
Evenstar · 16/07/2021 13:34

Sorry to hear that, has someone suggested it might not heal well? I think when you have some medical knowledge it is hard not to worry about things, my mum was a nurse and often seemed to be aware of things that other people wouldn’t have worried about.
