Diet & broken limbs/limited mobility (Terrified of weight gain)

Hello all,

I'm 3 weeks post bimalleolar Ankle fracture and 2 weeks post surgery to fix the the break and dislocation.

I'm usually very very active (i did this while indoor rock climbing fgs Hmm ) I used to be very overweight 16st now 10st and thankfully I've lost my desire for things like white pasta and chips/crisps since the break.

I just cant treat myself at the moment as I feel I don't deserve it. adjusted my diet to low (ish) carb - berries and protein yogurt, fish and salad for lunch and chicken with greens in the evening. snacking on nuts or low sugar protein bar. And of course no alcohol due to meds/thinners

Has anyone else been through similar and found diet played a massive part? did you eat your usual pre-break diet? did you lose or gain?

Do you have cast off then boris! Yes I was a little shocked I couldn’t move me bleeding ankle. What’s it gonna be like in another 3 weeks! Just gotta not think about it😐.

Franklymydearidontgiveadam · 07/07/2021 17:59

That's when I went from Back slab to cast. My vast is another 3 more weeks xx

Lushmetender · 07/07/2021 18:19

A lot of us hopefully moving onto next milestone in 3 weeks! Was thinking of starting work again next week but worried I’ll be too emosh! But equally this 2 weeks have REALLY dragged!

Graphista · 08/07/2021 00:51

I'm so sorry for the loss of your degus, we used to have gerbils and I grew up with various pets

Heartbreaking to lose them Thanks

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 08/07/2021 11:12

it is isnt it @Graphista you don't realise how much they become family.

Being off from work has actually made me realise how stressful my job and how unhappy I am there, Ive applied for a couple of places, had a telephone inteview, told them about the breakage and they are still keen to meet me.

I have actually been calmer from not dealing with the stress of my current job, Sometimes i actually think things happen for a reason xx

OP posts:
Graphista · 08/07/2021 12:43

I believe a lot of things happen for a reason. I'm a Scot we have a phrase

What's for you won't go by you.

And I've had a lot of crap happen to me! But I try to hold onto that life is putting me in a certain direction for a reason.

Loss of pets really sucks. My poor dd when our gerbils died was completely blindsided, she knew she loved them and she was very good with them, she didn't think she'd be so affected by their loss.

Lushmetender · 08/07/2021 13:50

Ha ha yes my job is Uber stressful too so I have an interview tomorrow! I am also speaking to my boss tomorrow as welll as been off for 3 weeks now if you count the holiday! I’m based in Scotland too! Have a friend coming down today so at least that will keep me occupied for a bit! These past 2.5 weeks have really dragged! Don’t know if anyone else is having problem with other muscles they never knew existed. Think I’ll pulled my shoulder going up and down stairs on my behind!

Evenstar · 09/07/2021 14:01

Hope all are doing OK today. DH helped me wash my hair this morning so feeling fresher and I have a shower stool coming tomorrow. It will be nice to have a proper wash, instead of a flannel strip wash.

Finding my foot has swollen a lot in the night the last two nights, I have been keeping it up ( well no choice with that) doing some gentle foot exercises that the physio gave me and putting some ice on. Seems to be helping.

DH has gone to meet a friend for coffee and is bringing me a cake, I feel unreasonably excited about that as I haven’t had any for nearly a month.

Lushmetender · 09/07/2021 16:32

Hi suppose the weather is v muggy today so probably the reason for swelling. I am feeling v sick. Not sure if it’s the heparin playing havoc with my stomach! I got really stressed last night with the cast! I think I have cast claustrophobia!

Have you had physio consult already? What kind of exercise do they suggest in a cast? I would love to try and retain muscle under the cast if I can do any tips! There’s a theory if you exercise the food leg it helps!

I spoke to work today who said I need a fit note to phase back into work so requested one! I need something to pass the time until i get this cast off!

Evenstar · 09/07/2021 18:10

I don’t have a cast, just bandaged and a surgical shoe if I am on my feet to stop me putting weight on the front of my foot. I should be seen by the surgeon next week, but my first review is now the week after as we are away. I am hoping I might be allowed to lose the crutches and just use the shoe as it will be three weeks by then.

I saw the physio at the hospital before my operation and I think they see me again around 6 weeks to show me exercises to make sure I can bend my big toe.

For now it is just things like wriggling my toes and circling ankles and moving my feet up and down.

Lushmetender · 09/07/2021 19:05

Ok yes it’s a bit of a drag being on the crutches and off the feet!

Did you get your cake? My friend brought over 3 packs of cakes! Not sure when we’ll eat them all.

Got a Rick steins breakfast which we’re going to have tonight! All day breakfast😬

Evenstar · 09/07/2021 19:31

Yes a gluten free blackberry Bakewell tart, it was lovely. Your all day breakfast sounds yummy, not good to have lots of cake in the house though. Too tempting for me anyway 😂

Lushmetender · 11/07/2021 11:59

How is everyone today? Going to watch the football final?

Evenstar · 11/07/2021 12:21

Definitely, I am hoping to get downstairs for a couple of hours, but actually feeling very tired the last couple of days, perhaps the general anaesthetic still leaving the system. It would be nice to go downstairs and be part of it.

Hope everyone else not too uncomfortable today.

Lushmetender · 11/07/2021 14:55

Hope you feel more energised soon evenstar. It’s afternoon and need to get downstairs soon. Keen to watch Branson go to space in 30 mins. Well 2 weeks and 1 day until next appt. can’t come quick enough!

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 12/07/2021 10:22

Same as me Lush! I have the Champagne ordered! y sick note runs out on the 29th June which will be a Thursday but im going to email my boss today to ask for A/l until the Monday 2nd Aug in case I can partially weight bare etc and get boot as I want to get used to it first as apparently its not that easy and I want to take my time and not be like right, cast off - off you go back to normal. x

OP posts:
Lushmetender · 12/07/2021 11:30

What a shame for England last night!! Now the sport is finished what can I do with my time🙄. Two weeks today! Gosh really hope the bone is healing ok and can go into boot. I’ll only be 5 weeks in so I’m going to have to be prepared they might keep the cast on for longer. Hope I can move to the boot because at least you can start the exercises etc to build the muscles back up.

I don’t know what happened in the night but woke up and my ankle hurt. Must have been lying funny! I wouldn’t think your bone could
Move in a cast? This one is still fairly snug.

Still not had a shower yet! Still using flannels and baby wipes!

My daughters 9th birthday on Monday so need to focus on that this week! Weather looks as though hotting up so will organise a family barbecue! Well I’ll organise but husband will need to execute!

Re work. I work from home full time so not sure I can work to the sick line I had. Have asked for phased return re Dr but work was concerned about my workplace being set up correctly.

Hope everyone is enjoying the ☀️

Lushmetender · 13/07/2021 12:06

How is everyone today? I bought an inflatable hot tub! We’d been hiring them for birthdays and decided more cost effective to buy! It’s for my physiotherapy😬.

I hardly slept last night! I’ve pulled my chest muscles with all this hauling myself about on crutches! Trying to keep painkillers to a minimum but not for my ankle now but all the other muscles I never knew I had!

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 13/07/2021 12:29

My other half is calling me Lieutenant Dan! from F/gump as i move around on my bum a lot and shuff up down the stairs a lot.

My skin had gone grim on my cast foot x

We are on holiday now, luckily at Centerparcs as my husband is going to have to wheel me down to the on-site medical centre as my dressing is falling apart!

When the consultant said it would be fine to see him in three weeks instead of a fortnight he hadn’t thought of that. I would be struggling to get an appointment at the GP’s to have a dressing done and I think hospitals seem unaware of how difficult it is to get seen.

Hot tub sounds good!

Lushmetender · 13/07/2021 13:13

Boris - how as the skin gone bleargh?

Evenstar - enjoy centerparcs. Not been there in a while!

As my hols were rudely interrupted I don’t feel like I’ve been away! I want to book somewhere but only when I know I can vaguely enjoy it. Until this cast is off I don’t feel I can plan anything. My hols from previous years keep coming upon Facebook. My hols will be great again soon🤞

I now have my sick line for phasing back into work! Haven’t sent it in yet! Am I ready?

Evenstar · 13/07/2021 13:25

I seem to remember DD’s arm being very pale and bit like when you have stayed in the bath too long when she had a cast off years ago. It didn’t take long to go back to normal.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 13/07/2021 14:34

the skin has gone very dry on the toes, 13 days until I see the inside!
