Gastroentiritis in 11 month old: rubbish advice from GP?

DD, 11 months, has had an on and off diarrhea and vomiting bug for the last 10 days. She's at nursery so this is par for the course I reckon. Both DH and I have had it too but it seems to have passed with us. Took DD to the GP this am and he told us it was gastroentiritis and to keep her off all dairy (inc. milk) for 24 hours. This sounds like such odd advice to me esp, as she's not one yet, and although is eating 3 meals a day, is still taking 3/4 bottles of milk a day. Anyone have any thoughts?

There is a theory that when kids have D&V they can become temporarily lactose-intolerant hence the no dairy advice. However it's now thought that's pretty rare and current advice would be to push fluids & definitely not to stop milk in an under 12 month old. HTH.

Thanks Liath. I must say this advice did strike me as odd. His advice was to give juice instead! I have never given her juice, just water from a tommee tippee with her meals and she's always been happy with that so have never seen the point of introducing juice..
