How much does your 1 year old drink?

My DS (1yr in 3 wks time) has just started to up his intake of water/sugar free squash from about 3 cups a day to 5.

He doesnt have any other diabetic related symptoms such as lethargy or smelly breath or wee. Although I am going to get him checked just in case. I cant tell if he's weeing anymore than he should, but considering what he drinks his nappies are always going to be full anyway

I just wondered how much was normal for everyone elses DC's.

Friends in RL have babies who drink loads and babies who dont, but his just seems excessive to me.

He has two 8oz bottles of milk still, 1 on waking the other before bed. He eats really well, including fresh fruit and vegetables, but has the odd treat of a few skips or buttons. He does'nt really get offered snacks and I wonder if perhaps he is drinking as a way of filling himself up. Or just because it's there because we always make sure both our DC's have access to a drink.

My DD was always a good drinker, but not to her brothers measure.

Any comments gratefully received

he may just be thirsty dd 18mo and she goes through days when she will finish a drink and ask for another on the days she seems to be drinkin a lot i offer her water.
i tend to give her a drink with meals and snacks so 5 drinks then any other than that is water she is also still having the two lots milk!

Crikey - I wish I could get my 16mo dd2 to drink. She has 3 lots of 5 or 6oz milk a day. I struggle to get her to drink water. She always has a beaker of wate near her, but rarely picks it up - if given to her throws it aside! I'm always worrying that she doesn't drink enough.

dd has squash or diluted juice the only time she drinks water is at my dads he tells her its council pop, dd has just the 2 half pints of milk a day one first thing and one bedtime!

I have spoke to the HV who said drinking is a good thing and it's probably not a problem.
But when I next see them (next week) the will bring dipsticks just in case.

Lowfat - my dd is 15mo and has aabout 5oz of milk morning and before bed, but drinks lots of water during the day - nursery always comment on how much she asks for. i have never considered this to be a bad thing, just that with lots o running around and the heating, she needs it. i drink a lot of water too but i use my voice a lot and it is always far too hot at work. dd doesnt often have heavy nappies- is this good or bad then? did you ask them to test or did they suggest it?

LowFat · 21/11/2007 15:28

Olivo, I asked for the test as there is a history of diabetes in DH family (but I think it's weight/age related).

The HV will bring dip-stick on Tueday. I am not overly worried as he seems perfectly well and healthy to me, just cant get over the drinking. having said that you may have hit the nail on the head with the heating comment as with the cold weather the heating is on more often.

with regard to peeing they did;nt say if it was good or bad as I said he seems to pee as much as he drinks, his nappies are always heavy and often leak.
