Can anyone tell me if you have to pay for an eye test in England?

Both dd2 and I are having our eyes tested - dd2 seems to squint at everything she looks at, and I couldn't see a hole in the top of a needle the other day when I was helping dd1!

So I've booked us both in. The woman didn't say anything about payment, but I do remember a few years ago seeing advertisments in windows offering 'free eye tests' which leads me to believe you do normally have to pay for them. Anyone know how much? TIA.

If you are entitled to use the NHS then DD's test will be free (assuming she's under 16 or under 18 and in full time education). You will have to pay for yours - from memory it's around £15-£20
