Woke this morning with a stiff neck thought I had slept funny. Throughout day really painful and some spasm.

It hurts right hand side back of head right at bottom then down to my neck.

I had a bad neck a few weeks back same side but not the pain iny head.

Any ideas?

I get this if I have a different pillow or if I have slept in a different way, it takes me about 2 days before it stops hurting. I usually use deep heat or a hot water bottle and paracetamol.

Also if I have been decorating or doing something different in the day, I pay for it later as well.

What you have described is pretty much exactly how how my dp’s shingles started.
It might be nothing of the sort but if it is early medication makes a difference.

Apols I didn’t see that you had had similar a few weeks ago. Makes it more likely it is muscle related I’m guessing. The spasm triggered my shingles alert. Been worried about it as it seemed connected with first vaccination and second was a worry for dp as a result.

Don't want to scare you but if you start to feel drowsy, unwell phone an ambulance. I've witnessed 2 subarachnoid haemorrhage that started with symptoms you describe. I'm sure you'll be fine tho'.

I had a persistent headache (base of skull, RHS) for months and ended up being told by a GP that it was likely muscular (tight trapezius muscle pulling on that area). A number of sessions with a sports masseuse sorted me out. I haven;t seen her for 18 months due to the pandemic and the problem has come back

GloomyWaters · 04/06/2021 22:52

I had 2nd vaccine Wedn hope it's not related.

I can feel it along my neck. Area around the right side of my skull at bottom feels larger than left....

I think it's due to sleeping on a high pilloe...swapped it for tonight bad posture and going through a ridiculous stressful time so probs all related.

Ive rubbed some ibrofen gel in and wil see what next couple of days brings

Lying in bed and base of head is like electricity running through it when I move cant get comfy at all

High pillows can affect it. It might be inflamed muscle - if it doesn’t resolve go to the GP as they can check, and if you have pulled or irritated a muscle then anti inflammatories can help.

GloomyWaters · 04/06/2021 23:56

Ive swapped pillows tonight much lower and softer. Just worried as can feel pain in my base of head and its so tender to touch and def feels to other side

I get tension headaches every so often and the pain is worst at the base of my skull and radiates around my head and down my neck. I found doing lots of workouts helped strengthen my back muscles and reduce the headaches (presumably was getting them from weakness in my back)

GloomyWaters · 05/06/2021 11:04

Had to take a muscle relaxant early hours as thr spasm was awful. Have slept till 10.30am. Pain has eased definitely but strange as base if my skull is so sore and tender....my DH keeps asking if I have knocked it or had something drop on it as that how it feels as if Ive had a knock

Hi can I ask what happened in the end? I’m dealing with a very similar thing right now.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/02/2023 23:23

I had this come on last September post covid and am still struggling with it .
