I have a horrible thick coating on my tongue.
I have had it before and put it down to smoking but i no longer smoke and its worse than ever.
I did wonder if it was oral thrush but its not white its sort of brown/yellow.

I have triede brushing,mouthwash ect.
I dont drink coffee but do drink about 6 cups of earl grey every day.

No mouth ulcers ect.
Has anyone else had similar or any ideas what it is or how i can get rid.
I bought some daktarin mouth gel yest but this seems to have made it worse.
Thanks in advance x

do you suffer, heartburn or from a stomach ulcer? I would have it looked at.

fakeblonde · 16/11/2007 09:18

I think i have an ulcer as i get terrible heartburn-have put off going for endoscopy for a year but am now booked in for 26 nov.
Why did you ask ?

I had a stomach ulcer and had a yellow coating. This was many years ago and was treated with anti-inflammatories, so not a big thing, but still it might be connected to your tongue. I think in Chinese medicine they link a yellow/brown tongue with the stomach and digestion.

You could be righr because i had to get up in the night to take my ulcer tab as really bad indegestion-havent had it for a while and my tongue is worse than ever . Ill try changing my diet and be more ulcer friendly.Cheers x

Is it smooth or is it patterned? If patterned are the lower bits slightly redder and does it sting a bit when you have something very acidic? If so then it could well be geographic tongue (benign glossitus)(sp) which is perfectly harmless but can be somewhat annoying.

Lots of people carry Helicobacter Pylori in their stomach (it causes ulcers) and this can give you a yellow/brown coating on the tongue. This will be looked at in your endoscopy and if you have it they will give you a course of antibiotics. If you turn out to have the antibiotic resistant strain then Mastic Gum capsules or manuka honey will kill H.Pyl and some people have eliminated it completely using these natural remedies.

A naturopath will be abel to help as well and be able to prescribe dietary advice....It is almost always digestion related.

I was tested (blood)for h pyl and it was neg but i believe the results are somewhat dodgy a lot of the time.
I will see someone this weekend-we have a herbalist just opened in town and tbh thats as far as i ever get time to go so i will book appt today.
If its digestion related i guess ill have to find out what this endoscopy shows up because somethings not right with all the indegestion i get. Once i know what im treating sounds like my tongue will follow suit.
I`ll now have to google foods that are easy to digest ect but i suppose its boringly obviuos-fruit veg and water.
I seem to spend so much of my life giving up things which are bad for me
