Pain under ribs and RH side pain - any ideas?

Hi there,
I have had a pain both sides under and, it feels like, behind my ribs. Very similar to when I was pregnant. Definitely not now though!

Also a pain going from my RH waist round my back, like where gallstones are meant to be.

Slight shortness of breath, crazily so when going upstairs. The rib cage pains feel sometimes like I am being squeezed at my waist, is really odd.

Any ideas what this could be? Thank you

No I dont think it is that, I have had that in the past and it feels different. No real acidy like pain in the chest area

@AcheyRibs I didn’t have acid with GERD, just this terrible pain under the ribs.

Does it make it hard to know which side to sleep on @BrittanyKAMA, as it is hard laying down? Is just like a baby poking it's foot under my ribs!

Does it depend what you eat?

I ended up in A & E the pain was so bad. they gave me painkillers and said it was muscular but after the event a friend who has had her gallstones removed said my symptoms matched exactly. Right hand side pain, increasing in intensity under the rib cage, gradually moving to the back. Confirmed by my own GP later, who said come back if it happens again. I haven't had any recurrence but have stayed away from spicy and very fatty food

I had had this for a couple of week, I wrote a post about it!
Have you had covid? I had it in November and apparently it can be an after effect of covid

I get this when my gallstones are playing up. I also get reflux without heartburn that causes the same kind of pain you're describing.

No, it doesnt seem to make any difference. I dont eat after 8pm or before 12pm yet it can be very painful in the mornings when I havent eaten for 14 hours.

@RainOnMe79 no I havent had covid. Are you still getting the pains?

@KurtWilde yes, it does sound like gallstones. I fit the 3 Fs for sure - fat fifty and fair - to get them!

Ahh.
I have gallbladder sludge/sand and my symptoms are like yours, but it does tend to depend what I eat.
I can be fine, and then have an attack in the middle of the night traced back to bizarre things like hazelnuts, asparagus (ouch!) and berries with tiny seeds.
Though it's taken me about 4 years to put 2+2 together and get a scan.
So many women have gallstones though, it's worth looking into.

@AcheyRibs ah that's why my GP was hesitant to suggest gallstones as I don't fit the usual criteria. But then my mum and sister both got them in their thirties.

@BrittanyKAMA by gastrointestinal reflux disease do you mean bile reflux (coming up into stomach from pyloric valve)? Really interested to hear about your experiences if so as I’m just diagnosed... @AcheyRibs this is a potential cause as I also have the symptom of feeling like a baby’s foot is stuck in there a lot of the time and the pain under ribs...

Thanks you all so much for your advice and personal info. I'm hoping I can just put up with it as it sounds like gallstones. I keep off most spice anyway as I have a sensitive mouth and I hate hot things, so there's that I suppose!

I went to my gp with similar symptoms, had a scan which showed nothing (ie not gallbladder) gp said prob gastritis and gave me omeprazol which got rid of the pains, they are drifting back now I've finished the meds, gaviscon helps but it's early days yet

Could also be h.pylori infection- I had this years ago and symptoms are very similar to GERD.
Just to throw something else into the gastro mix- it's also possible to have LOW stomach acid which gives the same gastritis-style symptoms as too much stomach acid. I did the burp test (!) And mine seems to be low rather than high- and I was taking lanzaprol and antacids for the gallbladdery symptoms.

very true SOLIN! I was tested for h pylori and it came back negative.
I have heard similar about low stomach acid causing problems but surely when that is the case one would get no relief from antacid medication such as protein pump inhibitors gaviscon etc??
(Or is there more to it? 👀)

Could also potentially be a mechanical issue/musculoskeletal. Ribs when unhappy can be aggravated with breathing and discomfort can wrap around your body front to back.

Worth getting a check over by a chiropractor/osteo, to rule out at the very least. They would also be able to pick up any ‘red flags’ or refer you elsewhere if needed.

Are you any closer to finding out? I have what you describe and today it seems worse, but I did have spicy food last night so now I'm wondering if there is a link
