cartilage in ear - surgery

My DS1 was born without the cartilage in the ear that makes the crease which stops the ears sticking out - sorry I'm not being very clear at explaining this am I!!

This is only in one ear - the other ear is fine!

Anyway, he is 8 now and wants something done about it. We saw the Plastic Surgeon today and she was lovely and said she would sort it out if he is sure that is what he wants.

She said she will do it under a local anaesthetic and move the cartilage around to form the fold so that the ear won't stick out.

A local anaesthetic?? Ouch, ouch!! It will take around an hour.

Anyone got any experience of this?
