Relative with schizoaffective disorder is smoking cannabis, how concerned need we be?

My aunt who's in her 60's has suddenly started smoking cannabis due to befriending another mentally unwell woman who uses it habitually.

Her mental health is very up and down with frequent hospital admissions due to delusions and psychosis as it is. She is routinely med noncompliant. I'm worried that the fact she's now smoking cannabis is going to make everything worse.

She leans on my mother heavily and I'm worried about the effect my aunt's self sabotaging behaviour will have on her.

Should we be bracing ourselves for another major episode or could cannabis be well tolerated by somebody with such severe MH problems?

I think it is a very very bad idea, and I'm not against a bit of pot now and again.

Cannabis has been linked to psychosis, if she is med non compliant anyway it probably won't end well.

Thank you, that's exactly what I was thinking. It's incredibly frustrating.

We're treading on egg shells most of the time already due to her fluctuating co-operation with meds. The last time she was sectioned she trashed her flat and we had to pick up the pieces. I dread to think what's coming.

It might reduce anxiety and for that reason be appealing but I don't think the risks are worth it?

Have they tried having their meds injected fortnightly?

Best wishes, its so stressful Cake
