How quickly do anti-biotics work?

ds has got an infected tick bite, it was all swollen and red yesterday, so I took him to the doctor.
She prescribed anti-biotics, and he started taking them yesterday lunchtime.
Today he is worse, and has fever and aches and pains all over.

Does this mean the anti-b isn't working? Has your child ever got worse after you started giving anti-b's?

cant call NHS direct btw, as am in Germany!

I would get him checked because of aches & pains & fever TBH.

It doesn't necessarily mean they aren't working - it may just be that they aren't working quick enough.

Skin infections (cellulitis) can be v v nasty.

I thought they took at least 24 hours before they started to kick in, but could be wrong. Sorry, not a lot of help.

totaleclipse · 10/11/2007 15:10

TBH I would take him back, just to be sure.

liath · 10/11/2007 15:12

If he has a fever then he may need stronger antibiotics so I'd get hime checked out TBH.

PestoMonster · 10/11/2007 15:12

I think I would too.

thank you all.
He isn't better, so I am going to take him to the hosp in our town.

NN could it be Lyme's? Definitely go to the hosp.

(Am emailing you)

Nightynight · 10/11/2007 16:30

eek! I have scared myself reading about lymes disease now. But def better to know.

We have got another doctor's appt on Monday, when I will ask for every test known to man (and probably get them all, since we are in DE, lol).

Am still undecided about the hosp. just after I posted here that I was going to take him, he woke up and demanded chocolate cake and fruit, and seems a bit better now.

In case anyone else has a similar problem with anti-b's not working...ds was not better, not worse today, so I took him to the hosp.
They said it was an abcess, and they are cutting it open now.

eww soudns nasty. Friend has had a spider bite which has been treated on and off with ab's for 6 weeks and still not healing.

Nightynight · 11/11/2007 18:49

that sounds horrid.
ds is okay apparently, but has a hole in his buttock (tmi, sorry!). He is sleeping at the moment, but I am confident that by the time I visit him tomorrow morning, everyone in the hosp will know our entire life story, and he will be the family expert on hospitals and medicine.
