Ear wax build up and ear syringe

Last week, I got pain in one ear. There was also pain in a tooth. I was at the dentist not long before that for a cleaning and check up and got the all clear. The over the counter medicine I was taking wasn't touching the pain. I eventually made it to the doctor. There was a lot of wax build up in my ears. I was asked to use some eardrops and book a syringe in a weeks time. The doctor recommended the drops. I was a week using the drops. I made an appointment for the ear syringing. That appointment was a failure and a flop. The doctor tried to do the ear syringing but I had to stop the process a few times because of pain. It was so sore. The doctor prescribed an ear drop for me to use for a week and asked me to call back again for another try at the ear syringing. I'm dreading the next go at the ear syringing. It was so sore for me this week. I'm using the drops as prescribed 3 times a day. The instructions say 3 to 4 times a day and I hope to increase over the weekend.

Is there anything else I can do to make the next ear syringe as painfree as possible?
