OK, any tips? Don't want cheap and crap, but don't want to bankrupt ourselves either. Want to fit about 6 people in (or is that too kinky?), and have been advised to get one with a lid that comes on/off easily (automatic). Where do I start looking?

LOL it is a bit kinky, expect to be teased about swinging. You could plant on of those grass plants in your front garden.

We have a jaccussi brand that seats 4, and it is excellent. The lid is easy to take on and off, on my own and it is a normal one.

Make sure you have enough room, as the 'seats 6' ones are quite big, and you will need clearance for the lid opening system IYSWIM
