Any Doctors / Nurses - Fluoxetine Overdose! How bad???

DP has taken between 2 and 4 tablets of Fluoxetine (20mg each) a day for around 5 days thinking they were antibiotics. We just discovered today they are my adult DD's antidepressants she left behind after she moved out!!

He is adamant he doesn't need medical attention despite feeling awful! He has had numerous panic attacks all week, including 2 today, burning hot fever, chills, shakes etc. Should I be worried with it being an overdose over nearly a week or will he be ok now he stopped taking them and the side effects will get better?

@dane8

When starting ANY AD’s most get start up SE This will be on the minimum dose Your Dh as taken a large dose start up (albeit by mistake) so no wonder he’s got headache, panic attacks , hot/cold. This are classic SE of Ad’s

If he’s stopped them now, it will take its time coming out of his blood stream/body
Not sure of half life of Sertraline, maybe look online, or others may know. Once it’s out of his system he should be ok, these SE may go on till Sertraline as past out of his body, so may be in for a rough ride for few days

I’d just mention to whoever that dh had taken sertraline by mistake and had taken 60mg to 80mg a day for xx days, do you wait for SAe to subside.

Pharmacy will be able to help you there very very knowledgeable on drugs, more than doctors are

He took fluoxetine

Stays in the system a long time.

Has he a temperature? If he has then its not the antiDs and it may not be the broken tooth either. If he has temps constantly, with headache and getting a bit delirious/ saying weird stuff it could be something like pneumonia.

Dp stormed off to bed after I pleaded again to phone for advice. I've been to check on him twice and he is ok. I'm going to bed now, I'm exhausted and up early with my 2 toddlers.
Hopefully he does suffer over the next 2 days 🤨

Thankyou everyone for replying and helping calm me down and providing information. I'm sorry for infuriating those who suggested getting help, I know!! Believe me I know! I have hated tonight so much and I'm going to be ruined tomorrow!!

I hope he's ok this morning. If the dentist didn't give him antibiotics, how did he think the anti d's were antibiotics then? Did you think that they were old antibiotics?
Forget what he's saying about getting help, just do it anyway.

Wait, the maximum dose is 60mg?

At my last doctor’s visit my GP said she wanted to up my dose to 100mg from 50mg because I ‘seemed stressed and anxious’. I didn’t agree with her and said it was because I was wearing a mask for the appointment which was spiking my anxiety as it felt like I couldn’t breathe (in Australia so not used to wearing a mask.)

I’ve been breaking the tablets in half to stay at my normal 50mg dose. I have an appointment with a different GP this week so will bring it up then.

I hope your DP is okay OP.

DP is still alive. He's sulking around the house 'exhausted' getting himself ready to go play golf Hmm

@nolovelost he thought the tablets he was taking was Flucloxacillin.

He broke his tooth nearly 2 months ago but refused to get it pulled (he had a bad experience with our dentist previously) but as the weekend past approached the tooth became infected and the pain worsened.

He agreed to go to the dentist after the weekend so thought taking the old antibiotics would help. By monday he said the pain was better so put off going to the dentist. Tuesday he had that funny turn which led to me phoning 111 after taking 4 Fluoxetine tablets, phoned the dentist on wednesday, realised he was taking antidepressants on thursday morning (just after taking the last one) and also got his tooth out. That's pretty much how it happened. He's learnt his lesson big time!

Thankyou everyone who took the time to post, I really appreciate it.
