Poor friend, she has my sympathy - I've had several m/cs, all but one without bleeding, but also two pregancies with lots of early bleeding: red, brown, pink, the lot. I can relate to pretty much all possible outcomes, and I feel for her - the worst time is not knowing.

She will probably be given an internal (vaginal) ultrasound scan, to see if a foetus, and hopefully a heartbeat, can be seen. It might be a bit early for the heartbeat, if her dates aren't sure, but they should be able to see something to give them an idea of whats going on. They'll probably also do a blood test, to measure HcG levels and see if the u/s makes sense in view of the hormone levels. If the situation is unclear, if she's earlier than 7 weeks for instance, they might ask her to come back for a repeat HcG test two days later to check hormone doubling times.

I'm afraid its impossible to tell anything much from her symptoms...or even from the pregnancy test...I've had all of those, and things go either way. Only way to know for sure is to get the u/s and blood test. I wish her loads of luck!

She may have been carrying twins. I lost a twin at around this time on my last pregnancy. The pregnancy carried on without any further problems.

Aimsmum - don't want to get your friend's hopes up, but I had so much bleeding very early in pregnancy that I didn't even realise I was pregnant. Just thought that all our trying had failed again and was having a late period. Then I got a lot of pain in one side, went to GP - as we had been trying for a baby, no contraception, she sent me to hospital to have an early scan - she was obviously worried I might have ectopic pregnancy. Went home and did home pregnancy test = positive.

Vaginal scan next day (at less than 7 weeks, I have to say) showed tiny foetus in right place but no heartbeat. I had to go back at 7 weeks, as best I could judge it, to be scanned (internally again) to see if heartbeat there. It was, thank god. No blood taken.

Sadly, there were other women in the early scanning unit there on that day in tears - not everyone gets good news. .

Wishing the best possible outcome for your friend.

Great to hear your friend got on ok. Hope it all goes well for her.

Haribosmum · 07/11/2007 18:32

Oh thank God for that! . I lost a baby at 12 weeks a couple of years ago and ended up at the EPU. I'm so happy for your friend, it was the worst thing I've ever had to go through and wouldn't wish it on anybody.

DaphneHarvey · 07/11/2007 21:12

That is such good news Aimsmum. So happy for your friend. Bleeding in early pg is so common and it does not always mean the end of the pg. But of course you always fear the worst. Fingers crossed for her. Daphne x.

Hurray!

Thanks for updating us, Aims.

Best to your friend for a happy and healthy pregnancy.
