Itching All Over & Swollen Lips (25 weeks preg)

Had a bit of a funny turn last night - was out walking the dogs when I complained to DP that my nipples were itching really badly and spent the entire walk rubbing them under my coat - when we got in the house I realised the plams of my hands were bright red and they started itching like mad. No sooner had they started itching I began itching intensley all over; it lasted for about an hour or so before it stopped. During the itching DP said 'crikey, look in the mirror' - I had developed a dark red 'goattee beard' thing round my mouth, my lips had sowllen up and they were numb for the duration of my itchy attack. Had a look at books and internet and everything I read does not seem like good news and relates to problems with the liver during pregnancy and leads to it being necessary to deliver as early as 26 weeks! I'm with my midwife tomorrow afternoon but just wondered if any of you have experienced anything similar and any ideas of what it was??

It's fine today - all stopped rather quickly - and didn't have any more problems last night. I thought it seemed more like an allergy but couldn't pinpoint anything - I'd not eaten or drunk anything so can't think what it would be. The only I can think is that I put on a hat I'd not worn since last winter and maybe something to with that.
Can't get out of work today - I was off all last week with a viral infection and am out tomorrow and Thurs & Fri on hols! Daren't disappear early to docs today.

Hi I had OC with all my pregnancies, your symptoms do sound more like an allergy than OC. I didn't get any rashes (only where I scratched until I bled)or any swelling to the lips either.I itched all the time but it was especially bad at night. HTH

you should definitely see Doc, and / or speak to MW

it might be PUPPS

EmmaJW1976 · 05/11/2007 13:07

That does sound a lot more like an allergy that OC.

I think with OC, there is a lot of abdominal itching?

Lulumamaintheskywithfireworks · 05/11/2007 13:17

PUPPS is not serious ..

hennipenni · 05/11/2007 13:17

Lots of itching EVERYWHERE Emma, but particularly on pals of hands and soles of feet- it is truly horrid and can mke you feel very ill indeed.

Tallulah1978 · 05/11/2007 13:28

I had read about PUPPS Lulu, but discounted it as I didn't have a rash anywhere else on me, only the bit on my face, and of course my big botox lips! Thta' why I was worried about OC because of the absence of a rash, but the itching coupled with the red patch and swollen lips makes me think (hope!) that it was an allergic reaction - although to what I don't know, Will try puttign that hat on again tonight and see what happens!

Oh, thanks henni.

I just remember a lady opposite me on the Obs ward when I was pregnant who had it, and she kept scratching her belly!!

Tall - had you eaten anything different? I get the 'goaty' rash and swollen lips when I eat tomatoes, apples, kiwi, peaches etc.

Also if I go near a horse or even wear a horseriding hat!!

I had something like this last summer when I wasn't pregnant. Like you I suddenly became itchy and my lips swelled up It went with piriton so as I hadn't eaten anything new or used any new products I put it down to some kind of insect bite. The fact you were out walking the dogs at the time would explain this.
